Am thinking of foregoing the normal Le Mans week break and just going down on the saturday morning, has anyone done this before?

I've not done it for the 24 but we did it for the Classic in 2004 - we left Calais at 6am or something similar, made really good time until we got to Le Mans it then took us nearly as long again to actually get to the circuit! The traffic management may be better for the 24 but I think this would be your biggest problem.

The other thing we found was that we really struggled to deal with the temperature change! We'd driven all the way down with the aircon on in the car, stopped very briefly for a "comfort break" - when we opened the car doors when we got there it was like that first moment getting of a plane somewhere tropical!! The Classic is often hotter than the race but we both deal with the heat for the 24 better because we have time to get used to it!

At the moment of writing my car doesn't have air con and it didn't have it for last year so that is not a major problem!
