ferry costs - found a cheap one if your interested..

We go from Portsmouth most years, but this year P&O have given up and so the prices have risen as well! around £300 per car. Found that Newhaven to Dieppe run a cheap ferry for £60 return per car and two people.! - www.transmanche.ferries.org/ hope it helps!

Steve_T is on the Wednesday boat, Im on the early Thursday boat, and we're both on the (what was 12.30pm, which has now been changed to 4pm) Monday return (time now for lunch at Honfluer on the way back

Rather bizarely, I'm right now sitting on the Le Havre - Porsmouth ferry in the English channel (club class has free internet PC's).
Cost for this return trip (out Thursday, back Monday) including club class was UKP 52.00 (no pound sign on this keyboard). Just checked the same crossings, out Thurs/back Mon, for Le Mans weekend and it's UPK 250.00!

We come over to Le Mans 12-18 times a year; these are my personal view on the operators/crossings:
Portsmouth - Caen: Brittany Ferries. Expensive but considered the best service. This is the closest French port to the curcuit.
Portsmouth - St Malo: ditto above but even more expensive
Portsmouth - Cherbourg: ditto 1.
Portsmouth - Le Harvre: Now run by LD Lines (www.ldlines.com). Much better then P&O were, good food, reasonable service, cheap most of the year, but not during Le Mans week.
Newhaven - Dieppe: Transmanche, quite cheap, excellent food on board, bit of a slow crossing (although we heard they were getting a new ship soon)
Dover - Calais: P&O or SeaFrance. Get ready for shell-suits, shaven heads, kids running wild and 'are you looking at my Mrs?'. Can be cheap if booked early (UKP 30 each way). Thank god it's only a short crossing.
Dover - Calais: Eurotunnel. Quick, frequent, expensive. If you know how to do the trick of buying two day returns (from around UKP 15.00 - UKP 30.00 each) then go ahead. I know what software they use and they cannot/do not check if you've actually taken the return leg, although this might change.
Folkstone - Boulogne: Speedferries. Quick, frequent, cheap. Nicknamed by regulars as 'the vomit comet' as the speed it travels can result in very rough crossings. It can also be subject to delay as they've only got one boat.
We've never gone on any of the other crossings (Poole, Plymouth, etc) or operators (Stenna, Norfolkline) so wouldn't like to comment on them.
Out of interest, we are taking the vomit comet for Le Mans week. Main reason is to have the longer drive down.

We are going out Thursday 5:30pm so we arrive around 10:30pm - drive for an hour and stay in a cheap F1 hotel, ready to get to Lemans around 11am - then on the the St Saturns (?) event - which is a great car meet at lunch time on Friday. Coming back Sunday night late IE 3am Monday morning! gets back to uk 6am.
Ferry companies are ripping us off because of Lemans week, but this ferry co doesnt seem to have picked up on it yet. Seems mostly lorry drivers - so its 2 boxs of yorkie bars, and arse hanging out of pants so as not to look out of place.. See you guys there!!

Managed to book with LD Lines last week for £220 for car+2 + 4 birth cabin out (beer and a good kip for the passengers AND drivers ^_^).
Looks like LD Lines will be one of those to book as soon as the dates are announced each year.
nice one mate. So are we.. which crossing are you on? we go Wed night.... rather smugly booked the group up for less than £140 inc cabins..
We have booked to take the cobras over for the classic and got them on Transmanche, Newhaven-Dieppe for £40 return !!!!!!
Also got cabins ( 4 berth ) for £20 all in.
Absolute result considering its the beginning of July.
Going out Weds night and back Mon lunchtime and weve got the new ship coming back.

On the Tuesday night crossing - nothing like having the full range of Careforre produce to choose from.
