Anyone got any decent routes for the trip ?

Last year went N138 pretty much all the way, however Rouen was a bit of a ball-ache.

Don't really want to go motorway all the way either.

There's no easy route to avoid Rouen. There is the new autoroute bypassing the N138 this year, so the amount of motorway is down to personal preference. Buy a Michelin (or IGN) folding map (like our Ordnance Survey ones) and use that for route planning, they highlight scenic routes in green.

We did via Rouen there and Paris back last year. Too much motorway and too much queuing in Rouen and Paris.

This year we've decided to at least go down on the back roads and have used ViaMichelin to plan a route.

Obviously used the same start and end points, but clicked "avoid peage" to get a first draft, which kept trying to drag us back to non-toll motorways, so then added some "via" by looking at towns on the way and sticking those in.

It's come up with a route from Balham that it says will take 10 hours, but obviously we'll be looking to shave a few tenth's off here and there........

Here's that Michelin link , very useful www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm

It gave a very short time from South Norwood in London to Le Mans, they must have done it without stopping or traffic, and not to mention getting lost!

The excellent http://maps.google.co.uk now covers mainland Europe, so that might be another tool to help find scenic routes.
