Discussion
A group of us are driving down for the first time this year and we have been discussing the route. We had a few questions that maybe some of the regulars can answer:
Is €50 about right for the tolls each way?
My 2004 Michelin Europe Map shows a new motorway being built from Rouen to Alencon. Is this open? Is it toll?
We were contemplating taking the back roads from Dunkerque. The D928 goes to Abbeville and then you can pick up the E402 route non-toll (according to the map). After Rouen it will be back off the motorway again. Has anyone done that road? What is the travel time like at sensible speeds (we have a diverse group of cars and one of them will pretty much keep us within the limit)?
Thanks a lot,
Dave

Allow a couple of hours South of Rouen although you probably won't need that long. Don't forget you can stick a UK credit card in the "CB" booths on French motorways. Saves you worrying about how many euros you need and you can watch all the Brits who don't realise this queueing up at the cash tolls!

Really? What does CB stand for? Do the machines ask for a PIN ?

Thanks! always assumed that the credit card toll booths only took French cards, but i guess a Visa is a Visa anywhere.
Be warned - though the toll booths might take UK cards their pay-at-the-pump petrol stations don't. Make sure you have enough fuel to get all the way to Le Mans when leaving Rouen or you will be riding your luck/speaking pidgeon French to a local asking if they will card your fuel if you give them the cash (always a fun Le Mans hobby).

Hahaha! did this on the way back last year! not again methinks...
If you guys head onto mappy.com or viamichelin.com you can do an itinerary from point of arrival to destination. By adding in going via the odd village and, if necessary deselecting the "express" option you can make it follow the route that you have selected. It will give you toll costs, travel time (at law-abiding speeds), etc.
