I'm arriving there on the Wednesday with a friend and my two young sons. Just wondering if there's some other stuff worth doing or seeing nearby during the days before the weekend?

Thanks

Wednesday Practice
Thursday night practice
Pit walk, drivers perade, PH meet on the mulsanne and general crazyness on friday

Funfair, watching the fireworks

Other than that use the time to find your way around the track find some good spots to watch the race from and generally soak up the atmosphere

There are also loads of nice town locally which are good for relaxed lunches away from the crowds

Best thing I did last time was to decide to talk to anyone and everyone. If someone stood next to me it was "Hello mate...where you from?" Sure, I came across some misrable gits, but on the whole it was a great thing to do. I met some fascinating people.

Martin.

There is also the museum just outside the main entrance. Worth a few dingbats to go in and see some classic road and race cars

I always make sure I get some sleep.

I travel down on the Thursday morning, getting there mid afternoon. Pitch the tents/gazebo, inflate the air bed unpack the car, go to the supermarket and buy bags of ice, food, beer, water and disposable bbq's etc. We then eat and drink for a few hours and by 10-11pm I'm ready for bed.

Friday it's get up 9ish and head into Arnarge village for a spot of breakfast. Then on to Arnage corner to park up and have a wander around, looking at the cars and chatting to owners. THERE IS A LOT TO SEE AROUND INDIANAPOLIS AND ARNAGE CORNERS. Make sure you don't miss this. We spotted 4 different Ferrari F40's on the Friday morning last year, which should give a taste for the concentration of top draw exotica around.

You can then drive around to the Mulsane Straight too, but watch your speed - there'll be police about with the speed cameras out. It's worth a drive up the straight though. Also, there's frequently chaps having a bit of fun outside Hundares (sp??) cafe. Often a little reckless, and perhaps not as responsible as you might like to demonstrate to your own children, but it's fun.

The drivers parade in town on Friday evening is good - but can be a lot of standing around as you need to get there and park before town gets full and they close the roads, and can't leave until they then open the roads again. Nice and family friendly though. We're off to Houx roundabout this year on Friday evening, as in the last 9 years on the trot that I've been going, I've never been.

Don't remember when the pit lane's open on the Friday - mid day ish? Again, worth a look, but I remember it beeing very hot on previous years.

Sat morning, make sure you see the morning race. Not sure what it is this year, but if it's the historics, it's very good and well worth a look.

We've been tempeted to go to the supermarket on the Sat morning. If you do - you'll get stuck in traffic and a 2 mile journey WILL take 2 hours plus. We always try not too, but we need fresh food and water by then, and have never managed to plan it well enough not to go out.

Remember that the last thing you or your kids want is to be knackered on the Saturday.

Oh, and presuming you're all camping - take ear plugs. Took us a few years to learn this one - but they're well worth it.

Don't know if they're old/brave enough, but what about taking your boys on the Ferris wheel after dark while the race is on? What a view! Memory of a lifetime

Pit lane opens about 0800 or 0900 until 1700 on the Friday.

Some good tips here, I'd echo the drivers parade, the pit road walkabout, make sure you have earplugs for yourself and the boys - these cars are VERY loud, it irritates the crap out of me to see children with their fingers in their ears because they don't have any ear protection. Preferably take proper ear defenders (then use radio earphones underneath them to listen to Radio Le Mans)

If the weather is as hot as last year the museum is air conditioned so plan a visit for a hot point of the day when you're struggling to get shelter elsewhere!!

How old are the boys?

Usually it's every night and it is usually the Germans in the tent next to me that set them off just after I have fallen asleep

I find the ear plugs very useful for when I want some sleep. Even 1/2 a mile from the track, the cars a blinking noisey at 3-4 in the morning. Also, on previous years we've got ferries back on the Monday lunch time, so had to get up early on the Monday morning. The Sunday night can be very noisey, with revelers enjoying themselves until well into the morning, and when I've got a 5am start I need some kip.

Also, take a golf umbrella each too. It always seems to be either very hot or very wet (was it '00 or '01 that was particularly wet?). So much so, it stands a chance of jeopardising my weekend if I get too much of either.

The boys are 11 and (nearly) 9...I'll see about getting some ear-plugs.

We're staying at Castel Camping de Chanteloup Sarthe.

Thanks for all those tips!

I'm sure they'll love it - we've missed the chance to take my friends 11 year old car and race crazy twin boys this year. The'll be in "big school" next year so I guess it becomes more of a problem.

If it's anywhere as near as hot as last year take it easy and don't try to achieve vast amounts and make sure that they and you drink LOTS of water. If you wanted to change your mind on the camping front there are lots of tickets around at the moment and camping at the circuit makes it much easier to get some "down time" without having to go off circuit - having stayed on circuit and off it is much better staying on the circuit.

Good luck and enjoy!!
