Driving licence photocopying question

I have noticed that some wisened folk have advised that a photocopy of your driving licence is taken instead of the genuine article. Thus if it gets "borrowed" you won't have to wait for it to be posted back and pick up from the embassy in London. My question is do the Gendarmes mind you handing over a photocopy. Also this may sound like a dumb question but do you photocopy the paper portion, the picture licence or both? Is the aim to get a good colour photocopy so it can be passed off as the original or is it acceptable for it to be an obvious photocopy?

I reckon you need to take copies of everything to hand out if you need to etc, but keep the original safe with you though. It has been said somewhere they are not too pleased if you only have the copies. I can't look now, sorry, but this has been discussed before...

just give them the copies, don't ever hand out the originals

a mate was stopped a while ago and refused to hand over his driving licence despite being asked for it over and over again

they threatened to get a local magistrate to force him to hand it over but they eventually got bored, sent us on our way and pulled over another couple of brit registered astons to relieve them of 750 euros

Take copies if you wish but have originals also. French get very spiteful if you don't have all your papers. €750+
