Before the end of the race the traffic is not to bad at all but after the race the roads turn into car parks for hours. With the race ending a 17.00hrs this year there may well be more people heading off before the end. From your campsite head through Arnage the head for the motorway, last year we had to leave half an hour before the end of the race and we were on the motorway 15mins after leaving the campsite(Tecnopark) just down the road from your campsite.
Hope this helps.

Jase.

Heretic here! Have actually missed the finish for the last three years. Leaving around 11:30am/12:00 midday means fantastic clear roads, one gendarme each time we've made the journey, and you get back home to Blighty for tea and medals. Perfect!

Best time to leave is the following Tuesday, great drive back and jams. The new road will get you from Le-mans to Rouen in 1 hour and 35 mins easily. Its great.
We are going this Sunday for 10 days.

Surely the drive back through the roads lined with onlookers is one of the highlights of the weekend. The N138 ,even with the gendarmes, provides some great hooning opportunities.

Might be leaving around lunchtime myself but going south, hoping for clear roads.

We found that by leaving early Saturday afternoon the traffic is almost non existant and you dont get kept awake by the inconsiderate racing drivers who insist on racing their noisy cars all night.

I found the best way to avoid the traffic is not to go at all. Worked really well last year.

Sunday night drive back is great, best bet is to leave about 30 minutes before the race ends......if of course you are a heretic.....

The French crowds watching the Brits leaving are great on the Sunday night.....always makes me think they are checking we haven't nicked anything.

We are leaving on the Monday this year so nice meal and a few beers south of Le Mans on Sunday evening, then leisurely drive up to Calais on the Monday.

We Leave the return till midday Monday, so can enjoy Sunday and have a relaxing drive & stop-offs on the way back.
Only once a year, so makes sense to make the most of it...

i think you are on to something there, its foolproof.

much better than my suggestion to leave on Saturday following the start.

I once had to leave an hour before the end of the race due to work commitments and swore I'd never do it again.

It's not that bad being on social security...!!!

Seriously, unless you're

a) about to have a baby/become a father,

b) someone's died or

c) your getting married (not sure if this one's even valid)

then what possible reason could there be to leave before the end of the race????????

My wife is due to give birth to our first child on 29/7 which sounds like plenty of time....... but I'm going armed with train timetables from Le Mans to Paris / Lille / Waterloo just in case!! I could drive but it'll probably take longer, my passenger will also miss the race and neither of us will be sober enough to drive anyway!!

We're leaving on the Sunday, not sure whether before or after the race.

To be frank, last year was shit, post race. The fair was shut, the stands were gone, there was no food or drink and the fireworks did my head in.

I'm all for partying and going mental but if you have to leave at 7am on the Monday, you can't get leathered on the Sunday night.

Right, that's it. I'm off now to put my slippers on, prune my roses and relax to some classical music.

I doubt I could get back to Yorkshire to watch the finish. May have to stop off at a friends in London.
