Hi,
Just wanted to see if it was any of you guys we were kind of in convoy with on the way back From LeMans on the Monday? Was a group of Honda S2000's (maybe 2 grey and one black?) and a blue caterham 7 (or other 7 style car - didn't get a good enough look) all stickered up as Pistonheads cars.

Anyway i was in a black Saab 900 Turbo and my mate was in his blue Fiesta ST. Just wanted to say that i hope none of you thought i was driving like a twt! Seem to remeber trying to pass nearly all of you on the advice of my passenger and deciding i wouldn't quite make it pulling in front of you just before a truck and there not being much room. Anyway apologies if it caused any disgruntlement...

Had a nice blast trying to follow whoever it was in the Caterham, and was quite happy the old Saab did itself proud on that one. If it was you cheers for pulling over to let me pass - but like you i had to wait for my mate later on and slow down myself. Then my mate took a wrong turn! lol

Enjoyable drive nonetheless.

Did anyone else see the black Saab (i think it was the only one at LeMans to be fair!)
Anyone surprised at how well the 14 year old swedish rock handled itself, or sounded? (blowing manifold so not quite as nice sounding as it should be!)

It was me in the blue Westfield! Yeah was good fun, enjoyed having a little play and thought the driving was sensible by all parties! Your car is sweeet!! No worries about letting you passed, just thought I would wait for some people to catch me up!!

Hi Mike – glad I didn’t piss any one off with my driving – my mate in the ST suggested a few of you might not have been impressed with my manoeuvres

So t’was a Westie was it? Nice car and sound – what engine does it have? You properly took off when overtaking some of those trucks! Also noticed your leap of faith overtaking that slow truck up the right turn hill – and again my mate couldn’t believe you or I overtook there. eek That was where we embarked on a little blast though so was glad I took the chance (again I think he’s just jealous!).

Thanks for the compliments on the Saab – not bad for a 14yr old is it?! Details are in the readers car section but I have a blowing manifold and kept hitting overboost on the trip (hence the occasional lurching under full throttle) but it really is a good overtaking tool.

Cheers,
G

Ok Rich - now i understand!

BTW did nay of you guys see the mental French Renault Twingo driver (gold in colour) who was overtaking everything in his path - blind corners and hills or not! He passed 5 cars and truck all in one go up a hill onto a blind crest and right hander... Saw him pass me and thought he would just pass a couiple of cars but as we crested the brow of the hill and began to turn right i saw that he had overtaken EVERYONE Couldn't believe it - and had to radio back to the boys in the ST who were just as amazed. We really had "just been Twingo'd!"

Neilsie and Burnie - Mikey seemed to be driving preety well to me! Certainly made the Saab earn its keep trying to keep him in sight anyway (some might say that wouldn't be hard )

Oh and Mike, if these two were in the S2000's then i couldn't even see them keeping up with the old Saab!

Glad you could see round the truck, as i just hoped you knew what you were doing and decided to follow. That said tho the truck could only have been doing 10MPH and i reckoned it took me less than 3 seconds to pass it and the cars already behind.

Enjoyed the run with you mate - I got a bit scared at 130ish when I passed you first time!

Saab seemed pretty rapid!

Andy – which S2000 was the louder one?(can’t actually hear much over the Saab on WOT!)

Yeah you would pass me at 130mph – the legacy of blowing up the original g/box on the way back from the Monaco GP last year means that I now have a shorter ratio box and considerably lower top end. Previously I have had the car at 135mph (check out my saabphotos account for the evidence – passing a viper and cobra at approx 130mph with room for more) indicated with a full boot (and you know how big that is!) and two extra passengers. Now I wouldn’t like to push it past 125mph for very long (well it has done 150k miles!).

The Saab should be pretty rapid – but it’s not actually boosting properly because of a weak wastegate actautor– it was simply bodged for a previous track day with an mbc and I decided to keep the same setup but “turn it down” a little in a reliability bid!

Also enjoyed the run with you guys – and it’s made me even more determined to get a bigger group organised for next year (or I’m gonna tag along with some unsuspecting PH’ers) for a proper convoy!

Myself and my 3 mates clocked the black Saab Turbo outside that little pub near Houx Annex on the Sunday night after the race. We had forgotten what a great looking car they are!! I'm a bit biased though as I'm a big fan Scandinavian design in general (I brought my silver Volvo C70 T5 down, we were in Houx Annex with a black VX220 not far up from the infamous roundabout). I was quite impressed that I didn’t see any others – but that is the benefit of driving something perceived as a Granddad’s car!

The four of us were Le Mans virgins but would definitely go again – have you taken the little black Swede down before?

Simon,
Was it parked up at the time or driving? Can't really remember what we did on the sunday night - think we went into LeMans town itself for some food and drink and prob went for a drive around. Are you sure its the same one (see the readers cars thread for decent pics)

You're right about them being a great looking car though (i'm slightly biased as well!). I was a LeMans virgin also - i was meant to go last year but the little (not so little - actually bigger than the saab 9000 in length - nearly 4.5m!)black swede had a hissy fit returning from the monaco F1GP and spat its gearbox out - not fun i can tell you. At one point i seriously considered ditching the car and cutting my losses - very depressing! Will def be back next year though!

And for those in the convoy i found a couple of not so good quality pics of the convoy from my mates camera.

enjoy
