I'm thinking of using a large plastic dustbin filled with ice and water for the beers this year. My question is whether Carrefour sell them and if anyone knows how much? We usually use the supermarket in Arnage so never actually used C.

Nearly all French Supermarkets sell black plastic dustbins with clip-on lids (poubelle). They're about 12 euros a pop.

They do run out of ice regularly though. Last year we ended up buying bags of frozen veg, until some bright spark decided it would work better by emptying the veg out of the bags into the ice water, so we ended up with a rank veggie soup after a couple of days - brings a new meaning to wiping the froth of your stubby...yuckyuck

Yeh, they ran out of bags of ice at Super U but then started freezing big bottles of drinking water which worked ok. Although a little bulky.

Either way unless you take a fridge and genny, youre gonna have warm beer at some point!

Without sounding too sad - Super U in Arnage is quality!! Think we'll be doing most of our shopping from there this year.

Anyone tried that custard and chocolate croissant style thingy's Super U do? Couldn't find them in the le grand magique C!!!

Carrefour did run out of ice. I went on a mission around all the supermarkets I could think of in Le Mans until we finally found some ice! I left a few people in Carrefour with walkie talkies and mobile phones waiting by the freezer as we were told there should be ice turning up any minute. It never did!

We ended up spending over 60 euros on bags of ice cubes and huge blocks of ice from another supermarket. We also purchased a black bin.

This year I'm thinking that maybe wrapping foil around the bin would help keep it insulated as the black bin gets warmed up in the sun especially being black!

Another vote for the Super-U! Carrefour is good but with the roadworks last year getting out there is a pain in the neck. From MB the Super-U was an easy trip. We thought their meat was better as well and they had ice up until the last day or two I think.

Yeh I was thinking about the blackness of the bin. That seems like a good idea.

What about security? There's plenty of tanked up nobheads out there that would see an opportunity for free beer when youre away from camp. Trying to picture the lid clip down system - could I drill a whole in the lid near to where the metal clip comes up and padlock them both together? On both sides.

You could padlock it, the trouble is that potentially just says "look at me!!! I have something worth stealing inside".

It's a bit like putting a padlock on your tent...you're asking for a knife through the side of it!

The clips are plastic in general not metal, so no immediate answer to your problem springs to mind. Disguise is probably the best thing. But in fact, far less gets nicked at LM than mythology might suggest!

You could buy a cheap tent just for the beer bin to hide in Or find some shrubbery to disguise the bin!

Another thumbup for Super U in Arnage - Just a short blast from Maison Blanche and plenty of parking. They did run out of Gin though and the fall-back option of 'Le Ranger Whiskey' meant we peaked too early on Friday....plenty of ice available too

As you leave the track by the Porsche curves roundabout, get to Arnage and turn right, it's a little further on the left off a big roundabout. Traffic gets a bit heavy though, so it is best to allow enough time/enough ice to keep the beer cool in the car...

Wrong route to Super U from Arnage if you want to miss the heavy traffic. Turn right up to the circuit entrance, go under the ring road and turn immediately left. Join the ring road direction Laval at the roundabout at the top and exit at Arnage (also marked ZI Sud) turning left at lights and a few hundred yards later you are there. Four lanes are better than two, especially in race week. As regards buying a dustbin, why not go to Leroy Merlin on the main Mulsanne straight? From the circuit entrance, turn left past Maison Blanche and Porsche curves to roundabout, turn left and then keep straight on under circuit as if going to McDonalds etc. and at the next roundabout (a small one with GiFi on right) turn left into the complex. Leroy Merlin are the French equivalent of Do it All. You'll find everything there including generators! getting into town at the moment is a nightmare due to the tramway roadworks and will be so all year so best stay out if at all possible.

Great idea! SEALED BLACK PLASTIC container in the Le Mans heat. Oooh, your beers should open up like mussels after simmering at gas Mk 4 for forty minutes!

yuck

Me I think I'll draw a frosty one from the freezer of our 22ft trailer. beer

Alrite son, calm down. We had already addressed that issue with a bit of tin foil! wavey

Can't all afford freezers and 22ft trailers!
