Just found that you can apply for a transponder for auto payment of the autoroute tolls. If you are travelling alone it will save leaning across the car to pay, not easy in a Cerbera.

www.sanef.com

The site is for one of the French autoroute owner/operators. The web site has an English page but only the basic stuff. To get a transponder it is necessary to use the french pages.

www.sanef.com/fr/ecommerce/particulier/index.jsp

Although it is in French it is fairly easy to follow especially if you use http://babelfish.altavista.com/ to translate

En ligne then Formule mensuelle – Subscribe on line / Monthly

Cost is €30 deposit, €3 postage and €2 per month. Usage is then billed monthly to your credit card.

The télépéage, as it is called, is extremely useful especially when wearing a full racing harness in a RHD car but, while I haven't looked at the page, I think that you'll find it is only available to those with a french bank account. I've had it for years and wouldn't be without it. If it is available to you over there I stand to be corrected though.

Not sure about bank accounts but mine is charged to my (UK) credit card.

I'll correct you I just got one a few weeks back and used it to get to the Alps and back. Fantastic, wish I'd done it years ago. You get some funny looks as you head for the telepeage gate and a worried feeling as you wonder if it will work but it's brilliant!! Sanef/liber-t allow you to order from the UK. Can't remember what option I took but it's 30Euro refundable deposit then the tolls are charged to my credit card at the end of every month.

Wonderful! I had no idea that the French have finally admitted that the English are actually part of Europe! I stand well corrected and agree that this is a great thing to have when driving RHD cars. You should really have one when it is either the beginning or the end of August here in France and the queues at the tolls are about a kilometre long and you gently waft past in the outside lane!

OK. Now you have your télépéage transponder, just remember one thing. Every time you arrive at a toll booth you'll hear a little beep as it is recognised by the system. If it stops beeping you are soon gonna need a new one because it is running out of battery. They recommend changing it every three years at the maximum but it is free from any of the télépéage offices which are to be found at quite a number of autoroute exits and which you can find on the internet.

There is nothing worse than arriving at a toll booth in the middle of the night and the damned thing won't open the barrier! There is no prize for guessing how I found this out either.

And adding to the handy tips...

If you don't use the holder it comes with then make sure it is the bar code side that you hold up against the window as it doesn't work by holding the other side up and waving it about as the queue behind you grows

I was also told to put it out of sight when you are away from the car as it is a target for thieves.

Does a electric garage door opener also work? - allegedly they do on at least one French operated toll both in the UK...

Handy device and can save me 10 to 15 minutes per toll when the roads are very busy with holidaymakers - useful with 4 peage stations on the way to Normandy from Paris.

One thing worth noting is that they may not work if you have an athermic windscreen. This is the case with wifey's XC90, so I have to open the window and hold the transponder out.

Cancel my last Found it - IT is done - now I can allow my French speaking skills to drop below the pathetic level they're already at by not ever having to speak to a Toll Road Dolly ever again! clap

---------------------------------------------------------------

My French is crap, and I've struggled through it but need to check with someone here, is the only way to order by filling out the pdf's and posting them or is there an option to do it all through the website?

If you go here:-

www.sanef.com/fr/ecommerce/particulier/souscrire.jsp

It allows you the option of subscribing on line or by post. Looking at it, up to mid May it is a tenner including the transponder and postage.

Last year there were some very attractive young ladies working the peage barriers. Once I'd given 'em a nice smile I had no problems at all. If anything I had to beat 'em away with a sh*tty stick to stop them jumping into my Z :-)

Well, actually, there were girlies but they didn't try to get into my car. But only 'cos my passenger seat was full of camping kit. Honest.

As for the auto-payment-thing, yes, it's a good idea. I'm going via the Normandy beaches this year - does anyone know if there are many peage routes going that way?

I have emailed sanef now twice in my best froggy and still no reply. Is this just the usual french efficiency or do I need to worry ?

Well, as I said above, I ordered mine on the 2nd of April, and it turned up in the post yesterday, all the way from France too!!

If you've not got yours yet, then there is a help-line number 00 33 1 72 36 51 03. They should speak English - They did when they called me because I'd filled out my online application incorrectly...

Minty... you know if that passenger seat wasn't taken with tents you'd have had more than a few clambering in, you smooth barsteward you... As for your Invasion of Normandy, you'll not be far off the normal route, I can't see there been too many, I guess you could head South and pick up the old (138) road...

...but you're retun trip will be all Motorway, although which Ferry you taking back on Monday?

Don't forget UK credit and debit cards work in the CB lane of all the autoroute toll booths - there is no need to sit in the cash only queue.

Isn't using one of these a bit like (albeit slightly watered down) the tracking devices which the Uk government are proposing for the road tolls? I have no intention of getting one as it surely would not be too complex for them to know your whereabouts and the speed that you have travelled between toll booths. I don't want teh UK government watching my movements, or the French.

Got mine approx 1 week after ordering on line and that included the Easter weekend...has the money been taken from your card? Could be that the transaction didn't work for some reason....
