We are heading down on the Wednesday this year and thought that as we will have time on our hands, it would be good to break up the journey by heading off the beaten track and tying this in with a lunch stop.

Can anybody recommend somewhere in between Calais and the camp site that would fit the bill??

Any advice, much appreciated.

Andy, I do not know which route you are taking nor your food preferences, price range etc. However, my son and I will be travelling on Friday morning and if we use the N138 as opposed to the new autoroute we may take a food stop at a restaurant called Traitur au Rendez-vous d'Chasse which we have used before. It is a a bit tricky to find. Having gone through Rouen then used the autoroute to get to the N138, the restaurant is maybe a mile or so after you pick up the N138 south of Rouen, on the right hand side of the road.

Assuming you know the N138, after joining it south of Rouen it begins by going downhill. At the bottom, look for a signpost for the restaurant on the right hand side of the road and then take the track off to the right. You'll need to get there early as there are usually a good few Le Maners there for lunch. The phone number is +33 (02) 35 18 03 39, and the full address is Gare de La Londe, 76500, South of Rouen. I do not think they have a website.

Incidentally, a problem with a lunch break on the Friday is that it means getting to Le Mans at about the time the roads close for the parade, which is a disaster if like us you need to get to central Le Mans.

Good luck! R.

The town of Sees which is about 2/3 distance. In the main square if you stand with the Church at your 3 oclock at your 6 is a lovely little restaurant (I forget the name hence the hours!) that does magnificent Moules Frites (speciality) amongst other delights.

La Chaine D'Or at Les Andelys does it for me - fantastic views of the Seine with a lovely lunch.

Nice Lunch

Take the road from Sees to Carrouges - the D908 - one of the best driving roads in Northern France!!!!! Okay, a little off route, but what a road!

Beware, there is now a speed camera on the 908

If you exit the A28 at junction 10 and follow the D915, then the D921, then the D321 to Lyons-la Foret this village is the most beautiful place to stop and have lunch. The journey on from here to Le Mans is fantastic as well. Quiet, fast A and B roads and you arrive in Le Mans to the East, missing a lot of traffic.

The restaurant in Sees is called Taverne au Normandy and is really very good - we usually have a huge dinner in there and stay in town on the Sunday evening.

Le Chaine D'Or is very good. We used it for a convoy of 10 Ford GT's on the way to the Classic last year (booked ahead of course)....

This is the convoy waiting to get on the Chunnel:cool

Be aware that lunch ends at 2pm don't arrive any later or you'll miss it. Also we couldn't all fit in the car park - there is one just across the road in front of the Church though.

we always seem to end up in the same mcdonalds in the middle of nowhere on the way home!!!

seriously though, on the way down last year we just pulled up in the main square of some town and sat outside a bar having a quick drink (coke) for a little break.

Totally agree with W11AAM. I've not been to Lyons le Foret during Le Mans trips but did so some years ago when I stayed locally for a weekend. The village is idyllic, there's some good bars etc, and the roads around there are great. R

You would not be the first. The speed camera on the road beween my home and the circuit often has bullet holes in it. The local hunters seem to use it for target practice on a regular basis!
