Whats the journey like? Type of roads etc.. likelihood of being caught on cameras, expected journey time?

Roads are good - dual carriageway/ fast N roads, though you'll not see that many stunning cars. Many good places to stop but journey time straight to LM without stopping is circa 3 1/2 hours. Very few cameras but watch out for the motorcycle cops. Three of us got stopped on the Cherbourg peninsula on the way back. 90 euros each.

The Cherbourg peninsula has been heavily policed for many years, particularly whenever English motorists are likely to be there. Nice road tho.

Nice trip and we didn't see any cops last year (apart from one who'd come off the road and was in a ditch with a couple more helping him out hehe). Only problem we had to finding fuel, as you have to go off into the local towns to locate filling stations. Our cars only manage about 100miles between fill ups, so this was a big problem at 11pm on a Sunday night!!

Ughghgh. Sod that - get a good map (yellow Michelin 303 and 310 Local maps) and hit the D roads. Slightly slower but no one on them (including police), great road surfaces, fun bends and the chance to wake up sleepy French villages!

Anyone on the 07:30 ferry on Thurs 14 June going to Cherbourg from Poole?

Couldn't see this ferry on the 'which ferry' thread.

Yep, we're on that boat. Luckily we have a mate that is coming with us that has just moved to Bournemouth so not such an early start.

It's a good journey with no cameras. My parents live roughly half way between Cherbourg and Le Mans.

This route uses the Dual carriageway for the first 45km and then on after until Alencon are nice D roads.
