Despite being a Le Mans regular, I've never been that happy with the quality/volume of the various portable radios I've tried. What do others use? I think I need a decent radio and some of those headphones that fully enclose my ears, so they can act as ear defenders too.

What do people suggest?

not quite a radio, but any of the ericsson walkman phones which have a radio are really good, the earphones almost totally block out the noise of the cars

I'll watch this for radio recommendations but on the headphone subject, I would get small in ear plugs and then ear defenders to use when you need extra.

Unless you're planning to sit in a tribune for the whole trip you won't need ear defenders for quite a lot of the time and if you've got big earphones over your ears you'll find it quite hot and sweaty plus you'll not hear a lot of what is going on around you.

Much nicer to have little earplugs, I quite often wander around with just one earplug in so I can hear RLM but still be aware of what is going on around me.

Good point. And it means I can then use a lower quality radio and headphone setup, as don't need to buy powerful full enclosure headphones, as in-ear ones (that I probably already have somewhere) plus defenders will achieve the same thing.

Picked up this fella a week ago in preparation for the TT Races (Radio TT is on MW) and then for Le Mans (on FM). Saw no need for DAB as I've only heard bad tings about digital reception. I'll be lugging a camera round aswell so it's not too bad. And when we're sat in the village enjoying a nice frosty cold beer, we can all hear the coverage.

Not really pocket sized though confused

In most cases you won't hear the speaker of a tabletop radio unless you're some distance from the track. One of our guys had a Roberts Radio similar to that a couple of years ago and you couldn't hear it on MB without headphones.

I had a lightly older version of this www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SRFM97-SRF-M97-Radio-Walkman/dp/B0007UB54I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/026-3831722-8527659?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1179667951&sr=8-4 a couple of years ago and it was fab (until I dropped it into a bucket of water banghead)

I'm probably going to go for one like www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-SRF-S84-FM-Radio-Walkman/dp/B00006OAEX/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/026-3831722-8527659?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1179667951&sr=8-1 small enough to go in a pocket or on a waistband but not too pricey if I lose it or trash it!

I've just ordered one of these from Amazon.
www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DH5FP/026-9028496-5050033

Not sure how naff it will be, but certainly fills the disposable criteria !
It's only going to be used for listing to Le Mans FM from Dunlop so hopefully it will do.

For the past 10 years I've used an AIWA CRA21 AM/FM pocket radio plus Sony MDR-V300 phones. The radio is now old technology but does a great job. It runs on two AA batteries and these will last the whole 4 days I'm there. The phones are full size, enclosed and handily fold up. I'll have this set up on nearly all the time. I usually spend a lot of time in Maison Blanche tribune and also some time in the pit straight, plus walking the circuit. I've never felt the need for defenders, although I can imagine the opening lap or two if you're in the pit straight can be a bit painful. As Piglet says, you could say that defenders will impact the atmostphere adversly. In my experience Le Mans is nothing like as noisy as being close to the circuit at Monaco for the GP: that is seriously painful! R.

Leaper, oddly I too have an old AIWA, much better than anything I've bought since (post the legal limiting of the sound output for such things). I did invest in some noise reducing headphones (which have a natty system to keep out exterior noise) - perfect things for LM and save you deafening yourself by turning the radio up too loud.

For pocket sized I've got myself one of these fellas...

www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-S2-SRF-M80-Radio-Walkman/dp/B000068RKB/ref=sr_1_9/202-5644028-7308626?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1179682294&sr=8-9

Considering that I'll be lugging round a camera when I'm trackside it's not too big.

I can recommend a Creative Labs Zen Nano plus. It is a 1GB mp3 player with a FM radio and costs about £45
Its is very small and light and can be worn on a neck strap

I've used my Nokias before, but they're not quite loud enough...

Although last year I had to resort to a cheapo one, bought at the circuit, as the mobile ran out of juice..

I've gone for one of these :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl

FM and DAB together, plus some noise cancelling earphones, will see how it all works together!

the Zen nano uses 1 AAA battery. The battery life seems really good, one usually lasts me about a week.
