On a tunnel run to Paris on Saturday lots of cars got pulled over at the UK Chunnel check-in area for their numberplates i.e. dodgy spacing, lettering, screws etc. Apparently the DVLA are having a crackdown and each car got photographed and fined £30.

My daughter just returned from funeral of friend killed by joy-rider tragic Pleased to see the authorities spending time and effort on the important things.

What's the deal with screws? People using them to make letters look different?

I came back via the Chunnel from a week long trip across Europe( France, Belgium, Germany & Austria ) on Saturday and had no issues at all. That's with the car in full Le Mans livery including a huge "24" on the nosecone and 3/4 size number plates.

No race numbers so no idea I'm afraid.

It was on the way out on Saturday that it happened and apparently they explained to the offenders that the clamp down had only just started.

I returned from belgium a few weeks ago Dunkerque to Dover.

I was supprised to see ANPR (or atlease CCVT mounted at numberplate level) being used at british customs on the Belgian side.

It was interesting to see that the guy in the customs shed at Dover had printouts with Reg numbers on and already knew which cars they were looking for in orderr to search.

Now I think that is a good thing if it stops serious smuggling, drugs pushers, trafikers and illegals from entering the country and suport the use of the technology for this purpose.

but picking on incorrectly spaced numberplates?

Come on PLEASE!!

Is that the most serious crime being commited at our boarders or just the most profitable and easiestto spot?

Like shooting fish in a barrel I expect. The drivers are stationary and can't exactly go anywhere. Easy pickings.

Mate of mine got fined €60 by the local gendarmes in Arnage high street last year for no front plate.

Shoebag got stopped on the Paris Tunnel run on the way out for no front plate "it fell off officer" and again by French border control on the way back from France.

I came back through the tunnel last friday and the british customs on the french side did appear to be looking for particular cars. They were also swabbing every car interior and door handles, presumably for traces of drugs.

I agree that it is not the most heinous crime and it could be the most expensive way to collect £30 for the treasury but I have purchased a spare anyway.

Regarding swabbing, I would suspect that the authorities are using mass spectrometers to check for traces of explosives.

This is becoming more common place at airport hand luggage checks.

The tunnel is a very high profile potential target, so it would seem appropriate.

The swabbing isn't new at all, they've being doing it for at least 8 years - originally it was used to check for traces of gunpowder rather than drugs, but that has probably changed now.

I know this because my old man used to shoot pistols as a hobby (not in the ghetto!), and used to transport them in his car a fair amount, so it was always an interesting conversation at security as to why traces of gunpowder always showed up!
