Numberplate warning

On a tunnel run to Paris on Saturday lots of cars got pulled over at the UK Chunnel check-in area for their numberplates i.e. dodgy spacing, lettering, screws etc. Apparently the DVLA are having a crackdown and each car got photographed and fined £30.
Any of them have race numbers on? and was there any fuss about that?mikey_p said:

No race numbers so no idea I'm afraid.Dazzled said:
I came back via the Chunnel from a week long trip across Europe( France, Belgium, Germany & Austria ) on Saturday and had no issues at all.
It was on the way out on Saturday that it happened and apparently they explained to the offenders that the clamp down had only just started.I returned from belgium a few weeks ago Dunkerque to Dover.
I was supprised to see ANPR (or atlease CCVT mounted at numberplate level) being used at british customs on the Belgian side.
It was interesting to see that the guy in the customs shed at Dover had printouts with Reg numbers on and already knew which cars they were looking for in orderr to search.
Now I think that is a good thing if it stops serious smuggling, drugs pushers, trafikers and illegals from entering the country and suport the use of the technology for this purpose.
but picking on incorrectly spaced numberplates?
Come on PLEASE!!
Is that the most serious crime being commited at our boarders or just the most profitable and easiestto spot?

I came back through the tunnel last friday and the british customs on the french side did appear to be looking for particular cars. They were also swabbing every car interior and door handles, presumably for traces of drugs.I was supprised to see ANPR (or atlease CCVT mounted at numberplate level) being used at british customs on the Belgian side.

I agree that it is not the most heinous crime and it could be the most expensive way to collect £30 for the treasury but I have purchased a spare anyway.
The swabbing isn't new at all, they've being doing it for at least 8 years - originally it was used to check for traces of gunpowder rather than drugs, but that has probably changed now.
I know this because my old man used to shoot pistols as a hobby (not in the ghetto!), and used to transport them in his car a fair amount, so it was always an interesting conversation at security as to why traces of gunpowder always showed up!

Regarding swabbing, I would suspect that the authorities are using mass spectrometers to check for traces of explosives.
This is becoming more common place at airport hand luggage checks.
The tunnel is a very high profile potential target, so it would seem appropriate.
Yes you are right, about it that is were I work on the border there. This is becoming more common place at airport hand luggage checks.

So I take it some secret stashing of the fireworks will be required then ?I know this because my old man used to shoot pistols as a hobby (not in the ghetto!), and used to transport them in his car a fair amount, so it was always an interesting conversation at security as to why traces of gunpowder always showed up!
How do other people do this ? Anyone had any probs before ?
