A list of rules for those of you 3 (or more up)!

If you can think of any more then please do add,

History Lesson: The name for the seat (or seats) adjacent to that of the driver comes to us from the American "old"/"wild" west. During this period, Stagecoach was the only means of private transport aside from a railroad ticket. Stagecoaches were also a common means of transporting things of value (eg... payroll money, high ticket merchandise). In this period of lawlesness and in an area home to hostile (with every right) natives, protection was necessary. Alright, admittedly pretty much everyone back then was packin some heat. But for added safety, a stagecoach would always utilize an extra man, right next to the driver armed with a shotgun. hence calling shotgun
Rules So far
1. The Shotgunner must be in clear sight of the car, and shotgun can be called regardless of wether the driver is in sight of the car
2. If you are the first to be picked up on a journey, you are automatically given shotgun, untill you violate the other shotgun laws and thus, forfeit your position, the seat is yours
3. you cannot declare shot gun if someone has previosuly declared shotgun for that journey.
4. when simultaneous shotgun is called, there is then a foot race to the passenger side door from the all the people who called
5. shotgun cannot be called whilst inside a building (unless you are in a multi storey or underground car park!)
6. shotgun cannt be called in advance, only whilst on the way to the car for the journey
7. on the call shotgun if the driver wants to mix things up a bit he can call reload, this means that all calls of shotgun before that are void and the first person to call shotgun again gets the seat... and if u plain don't like the person who called shotgun.
this is often used when there is a simultanious call and the driver is unsure of the outcome, also a shotgun can have 2 barrels so a reload can only be called once
8. ja rob rule...if hes in the car shotgun now means back left so he cant punch you every time a yellow car goes past
9. Once shotgun has been called for the front seat then back left and back right can be called, thus leaving the fifth person who is travelling in the middle (or the "bitch" seat)
10. Being as how everyone is created equal, men have the same right as women to the front seat of the car. i.e. women don't own the front seat!
11. In the instance that the normal driver of a vehicle is drunk or otherwise unable to perform their duties as driver, then he/she is automatically given Shotgun.
12. Once the journey is underway, the driver is the obvious controller of the tunes. However if they feel the road needs their full concentration, or they simply cannot be arsed any more, duty is passed to the shotgunner. however putting on crap tunes or allowing for silence when the ipod finishes a song or ANY instances of TAKE THAT will result in demotion to bitch seat.
13. Shoe Rule, anyone calling shotgun must have their shoes on, this is to stop people running outside and calling shotgun, then having to go back inside to put their shoes on, thus slowing the journey
14. Shotgun overrules Dibs, Baggsy's and and other girly calls!
15. despite the debate, shotgun can be used to shotgun things other than the front seat (eg back left, back right, women, not going to answer the door etc etc etc)
16. If travelling with a couple, one of the couple must shotgun the front.....no one wants to chauffer two of their mates whilst they are sat in the back all over each other
17. If someone has successfully called shotgun, this gives them no right whatsoever to correct the driver on their navigation skills ("take a left here you dickhead!&quotwink or driving ability ("I'd be in third gear if i was drving&quotwink if the passenger does this then they forfeit their position as shotgun holder
18. if someone says "whats shotgun?" after it has been called then they have to walk
19. If you come up to the car and you already have whos shotgun..the driver gets in and reaches over to unlock the shotgun door. if shotgun opens it before its actually unlocked..(this happens when the driver is still trying to unlock it and person pulls on handle) they have to give up there rights as shotgun. Therefore..shotgun suicide!
20. The successful shotgunner, in the front of a vehicle, assumes the responsibility for all gate opening, off licence nipping into, takeaway ordering and question asking. He/she is, in essence the co-pilot and therefore the enforcer of behaviour in the vehicle and exacter of slaps/punches/water spraying/bag throwing at the passengers in the back.
21. automatic "couple's rights act 1997". This is that, if the driver is the boyfriend/girlfriend of a passenger in the car, they have the right to the seat of their choice.
22. The Pirate Rule - If One of the potential occupants of the vehicle is dressed (convincingly) as a pirate then they are given automatic shotgun. In the occurance of more than one pirate then a sword fight shall determine the succesful shotgunner.
23. When driving past a woman walking a dog, everyone in the car must shout of the window "who's walking who", it is the shotgunners responsiblity and failure to spot a potential heckling results in demotin to the bitch seat!
24. When riding in a 2/3 door car it is the role of the Shotgun Rider to allow rear passengers in and out of the back of the car NOT THE DRIVERS!! Regardless of the weather conditions.
25. obviously the previous rule on the subject didnt clarify things completely with everyone coming up with a new rule that over rules shot gun. NOTHING overrules shotgun. Shotgun is final therefore it cannot be overruled!!!!
26. Hewie Lewis or the news, will never be given the shotgun seat in any car!

I never new there were so many rules to shotgun. Only 2 in my car though, although i'd forgotten to add a shotgun to my packing list. My passenger may need to use it if any police are spotted hehe.

for some people the drive down to Le Mans can be 8hr+ trip, and so the claiming of "Shotgun!" can be the difference between arriving with the full use of your limbs or having no feeling on the left hand side of the body! Take for example you are the 3 person travelling down in a Caterham! The Call of "Shotgun!" could well be the difference between life and death!

27. Shotgun can no longer be called once someone's hand is holding the shotgun door handle. This officially stakes their claim to Shotgun and calling it at this time is just redundant.

28. In the situation where a group of people are travelling in multiple cars, you must specify which car you are calling Shotgun for.

From prior experience there are more critical shotgun rules than the ones posted so I would add:

27. The shotgun shall have a well-tuned understanding of the acceleration and braking performance of the car in which he/she is traveling and will ensure that all possible overtaking opportunities are taken advantage of. The shotgun must refrain from pussying about and particularly being indecisive about whether or not we will 'make it';

28. The shotgun is forbidden to 'catch a few minutes kip' at any time and any breaking of this rule should be punished by a sudden emergency braking maneuver (providing suitable space is left behind of course)

29. The driver is, however, entitled to require the shotgun to take over driving at any minute, particularly on the Monday morning haul home when the driver is feckin knackered and it's hot;

Currently there are four shotgun seats in a 911, a Tuscan, a Noble M12 and an Alfa SZ heading for Le Mans on Wed/Thurs from N.Ireland via Rosslare & Roscoff. Since we all have a zero in our B'days this year we're selfishly taking our own motors and noone's stupid enough to ride shotgun with any of us (previously we have all had turns riding shotgun with each other). If you see any of said cars buried in the front of a big Renault HGV then it will be safe to assume that the driver's judgement was less accurate than his shotgun of previous years.

As the shotgun should have a better view than the driver, for the french bit ,any attempt by the shotgun to slow the vehicle by " air braking" will result in either a smack in the mouth or demotion to the bitch seat at the drivers discretion

Hhmmmmm....reminds me of 2 years ago coming back on the N138 in my Elise, my shotgun called 'go' to get past a big HGV that was holding up progress, hit the loud pedal and was half way past when another HGV appeared out of the heat haze and dip in the road coming towards us yikes Not enough space to complete the overtake, not enough time to hit the anchors and pull back in....so went onto the oncoming hard shoulder at Mach 1.....HGV coming the other way went between us and the HGV we were overtaking....serious brown trouser moment !

I think there should be a separate section for the rules in a three passenger car, such as a pickup truck. As a woman, I have found that the middle seat is pretty much where I am to sit in just about every conceivable scenario.

Case in point, I typically get a ride to work from an old man in my complex, who also takes a little boy of about 10 years old with him as they both spend time working during the summer there as well. The first day the pair picked me up, I was a bit startled as the boy immediately exited the pickup so that I would have to climb into the middle seat. So much for calling 'shotgun'! I was told by the boy that the reason I was to sit there was because:

1) I was the only woman
2) I was only wearing a bikini and high heeled sandals, (I work at the beach) while the boy was wearing baggy pants, sneakers and a t-shirt, so I couldn't upset the pants/bikini/pants pattern.

It did make sense, as I guess it would have looked strange had I sat near the window. Anyway, that's my addition to this thread...

Pondering the particular circumstances of our chosen 'steed' this year, as well as in-flight requirements and came up with the following:

- In the event of the car not having any cup-holders, then the shotgunner shall perform this task

- The shotgunner will keep the driver supplied with sweets, drinks and nibbles burgeryum

- The shotgunner is responsible for keeping an eagle-eye out for the BIB cop and will alert the driver to their presence quickly but in *NOT* nono in a way that implies the driver is as blind as a bat with the observation skills of a 3 year old.... redcard

- The shotgunner is responsible for ensuring all windows are closed / doors locked if there looks to be an imminent attack with water pistols / buckets / water balloons / water cannons ! It is vital that he familiarise himself with the speed of operation of the windows in order to avoid any risk of moistness to the driver !!

and finally:

- The shotgunner is responsible for working out how to set / control the onboard trip computer because I'm buggered if I can work it out !!! nerdread
