Just come home from the old town to near Mulsanne and was stopped twice by the boys in blue and made to blow into the bag. Anticipating this I was well under the limit but they were not at all pleasant about it. The welcome committee it seems is starting early.

What's the deal with headlamp deflectors? Are they required? I'll be driving there and back during the day, so don't expect to need my headlamps on - will taking a roll of electrical tape just in case be enough?

Have been travelling by car to France since I was a wee nipper, my dad never bothered with deflectors and neither have I since being a grown up. Never had any problems so I will continue to not bother.

Technically without the stickers the car does not meet whatever the equivalent of construction and use regulations and is therefore illegal. Whether the gendarmerie worry about it or not is something I don't know, but what I do know is that my level of French language does not give me the ability to discuss whether I need them in daylight or not so I always fit them - they are cheaper than a 90 Euro fine which I guess I would understand!

In terms of getting them off, wipe the headlight with WD40 before fitting them and they come off much more easily.

The French police seem to like using this weekend to boost their lack of funding. Don't think it is worth the risk.

Nowadays isn't this a bit of a grey topic ? Cars with HIDs could have their beam adjusted to dip the opposite way. I think mine says do not fit beam deflectors to headlights with HIDs but see your dealer for adjustment.

Obviously I've had mine adjusted... honest !

Gents as the scouts say ALways be prepared, i am not taking the risk, also check speed as well, if not take a 10 minute break between check points when your having a blast!

Use insulation tape instead if you must mask your lights, it's considerably cheaper.

I personally don't want the unwanted hassle, so i have deflectors on (made of black insulation tape lol)i have a first aid kit, warning triangle,spare bulb kit also.Also have a visable 'GB' sticker on the rear.

On the subject of headlamp adjusters, I did a headcount of cars on my last trip back to France and of 86 cars I found only 7 with the stickers on. It isn't something the police will be looking for at all. They are only interested in speeding and alcohol. Be sure though, all of you, to have your driving licence, V5 and insurance certificate with you plus the european standard form to fill in in the event of an accident. Have a great trip and hope to meet some of you at St.Saturnin. Just look for the very dirty green short nose D type and a short fat bald geezer. I'll also be at Arnage for lunch that day.

HAHAHA! I've got pop-ups too, so I've decided to risk it, as I'll be driving in daylight hours only! I'll keep a roll of leccy tape in the glove box just in case though!
