CAN YOU TRAVEL JUST WITH DRIVING LICENSE? PASSPORT LOST

I had sent my passport off to my future employer as proof of identity and they had mailed it back to me. However, I didn't see the special delivery slip and therefore didn't go to the post office to colect it. It is now being returned to the office, so bacially sat in a warehouse or truck somewhere.

Can I still catch the ferry, if I take every other single bit of ID I own, e'g driving license, birth certicate etc?

Many countries no longer check passports at their land borders, but they still expect visitors to be able to produce a valid form of identification. For UK travellers this is the British passport. Remember, your passport will have to be checked at immigration control when you return to the UK. "

I had an invalid passport last year.

They didn't even look at it on the way out, but on the way back the UK customs noticed it. Upon showing my valid UK driving licence the guy was happy that I was a UK citizen and allowed me though.

The fact that I was driving my own car to which I had all the documents etc probably helped.

If I were you I'd chance it. If they let you through on the driving licence you will be over the moon! If you don't even try, and your mates come back with stories of lots of fun, excitement, best holiday ever AND that neither customs checked passports, you will be SO gutted.

I just spoke to a women from imigration, she said that her official line was 'no',however, she added that 'the odds are that you will be ok'. She said the ferry company has a right to know your nationality though.

The previous ten or so times I have crossed the channel by car I have never been stopped by customs, and surely the ferry company (Seafrance) should be easier to convice.

Basically I'm planning to head down to the ferry with every single piece photo ID I have (uni card and drivng license) + all other documents and give it a go.

If I'm unlucky I will maybe give my friend the keys to my car and hope the passport gets returned to their Head Office in Leatherhead some time tomorrow and get euroster/ or hitch to meet them at a later

Even with birth certificate, driving licence, gawd knows what else to identify you?

Its not often that mine has been checked, although they usually like you to hold it up, perhaps if you (or a mate) has an old one you can take to show?

Yes but it could have been stolen ?. You go all that way then you get turned back can you take risk of going with no passport ?.

I'm going to try my luck with the ferry and if not head back up to Leatherhead in the hope that my passport has arrived.

good luck. My neighbours boy went to France a while back and didn't notice that he picked up his dads passport by mistake - customs didnt notice either

A pssport is the only legal travel document we have in the UK. ID cards don't look so bad now.

NUEZ, Good luck! I go from here to Le Shuttle regularly in 80 minutes out of rush hour times, so Dover where I assume you're getting the ferry to Leatherhead will be about 90 minutes at a reasonable pace. By the way, not getting a job at Mercer in Leatherhead are you? R.
