.sirtyro, I've done the overnight Friday a few times, usually when I'm at Le Mans by myself. I have to say that with quiet roads it's a quick trip and I arrive at around 4:00am, usually followed by a kip in Parking Blanc for a few hours before breakfast and then the support race. One problem with overnight travelling is finding an open petrol station without card reading only pumps so I always take a jerry can.

we have 6 days, we leave for london on the tueday, spend tuesday night at a friends who also comes to lemans, which is like the start of the lemans trip.
then off to lemans wednesday morning about 5am, onto the ferry at 8am and in alencon by about 2-3pm few beers then dinner and the start of one of the best 5 days i have all year.

No Joke! Last year on the way back we got stuck in that mad traffic jam (well 2 really, one at le mans and another at a toll station) and had to try and find a petrol station around 11pm. Was not a fun experience. Luckily we found one, and when we got back to the UK it was nice to have no traffic.R.

It's easy to avoid traffic in Le Mans or the outskirts: start by getting the excellent street map (try Stanfords)and work out how to avoid the centre and autoroute entrances by all the various routes. I've been doing this for a considerable number of years and never struggled with traffic anytime.I stay at the circuit overnight on the Saturday because of the local traffic coming and going which seems unavoidable.
As regards the tolls, I think you probably mean the one on the A38 a bit south of Rouen. I went through there on the Monday mid morning and it took maybe 15 minutes, but I know it got much worse. There's a simple solution: leave the A28 one junction earlier and join the old N138 and follow the usual route to Rouen. Traffic in Rouen is not easy to avoid, however, as you probably know.
I suspect I've given everyone sufficient information to clog up the alternatives now! However, this year I'll be leaving the circuit on the Sunday after waiting maybe 2 hours and then using the old N138 to go north as I'll be staying overnight at Falaise. This will also mean avoiding Rouen, toll problems, etc. completely, on the way back to Le Shuttle.
