Getting to Arnage

Very quick question.

Having only been to LM once before and not venturing beyond the Esses or the Ford Chicane, how do you get down to Arnage during the race? Do you just walk along the outside of the track? I fancy seeing a bit of middle of the night glowing brake disc action.

Either you drive (there's free parking at Arnage & Mulsanne) or there's a free bus service which runs from the main circuit entrance to both the Arnage & Mulsanne complexes. Not sure that it runs through the night and it does get v.busy toward the end of the race, nearly got marooned at Mulsanne a few years back.

Officially, you get in your car and drive round and its bloody miles. Go out under the bridge at Porsche Curves and its not too bad but from the main entrance its via Arnage and then towards Mulsanne on the little bendy roads with crap signposting.

You can't walk track-side but have to follow the roads. Because of the road closures this isn't the shortest of walks.

Or you could just walk up to the main entrance and jump on the free bus that runs from the gravelly corner of the car park opposite... Think the ACO claim something like every 15 minutes but...it's France.

Drive, to be honest is the best way..

As others have said, from the Porsche Curves it's easy. Imagine you are under the circuit and travel away from the circuit, you wll come to a cross roads, from here you go straight over. After a mile or so, you will come to a junction on your left (with a blue and white industrial unit ahead of you) turn left in here. Follow this road until you get to the corner.

It's getting abck that's more tricky, but you can get to Mulsanne Corner, then Mulsanne straight (at Hunadiere) on your way back. Sign posts are sketchy, you need to have a good sense of direction! Try it during the day first..

I walked to Arnage and then to Mulsanne (also a tortuos detour) on the Sunday morning one year. I then retraced the route back to Parking Aerodrome - where I was camped. I set out about 10:00 am and got back to my car just in time for the finish. Damn near killed me. If I had known it were so far I would never have set out! Drive, bus or cycle are the only options really.

Edit: Arnage is 4.4 miles from the main entrance and Mulsanne is 7.6 miles (using the race day detours).

If you're around for quali on Wednesday and Thursday, then those are the nights to venture to Arnage and Mulsanne after dark, imo. Very quick by car then as there's far less traffic about. (Spot the picnicers with the fizz and the groaning table on Thursday night, and that's us!)

Anywhere trackside is now forbidden and those who try it are normally caught by the gendarmes patrolling the forbidden zones. There are always people who try it on the Mulsanne and if you do try do it from the inside, not the outside of the track. The problem nowadays are the spotlights which light up the whole circuit and so you show up not only to the patrolling gendarmes but also on camera. Prizes will be given for the best report though!

PS I have a mate who lives between Arnage and the Porsche Curves though.............

I've not heard of people getting more than the polite caugh and nod back in the direction of camp sites.

Like most things it probably depends on your attitude. Accept it with friendly grace and you will be back by the BBQ in no time. Try and run for it and make the copper chase you through the thorny bushes and...his attitude will surely change to reflect it.
