Cherbourg - Le Mans - Best Route Please ??

Just want to draw on other peoples advice , we are landing in Cherbourg and want to know the best roads to take to LM , we are in an ageing old Cortina (don,t laugh !)so probably won,t be breaking any motorway speed limits and could even afford to use the other roads if they are ok ? anyhow pls leave your comments..

I've done this route many many times, I always come out of Cherbourg heading for Carentan, then Saint Lo, Vire, Flers, La Ferte Mace and then onto Alencon. You can then take the fast road, or slow road (N138) to le Mans, I prefer the slow road through Beaumont Sur Sarthe as there are always loads of cars en-route to enjoy!

About 30 miles out of Cherbourg is St Mere Eglise (SP?) which is quite historical from WWII which has a couple of cafes for Pain au Chocolat and Coffee

Alternativly, after Flers head south through Domfront and Mayenne and then East on the D35 to Le Mans. The roads are lovely; quieter than the Alencon/LM motorway, you'll see less police and the journey will be easier on your old Cortina.
