Broken down....can you help
Discussion
Guys,
A friend of a friend has broken down on the way to Le Mans....so if anyone sees a white 68 fastback Mustang by the side of the road with a busted gearbox,it's dumped its oil over the road... please stop and say hi and see if you can help......this is the car in the picture......

Reminds me of my Dad's problem in 1972 when they were going to Le Mans, they added a day to their trip to go into Paris before the race. The Spitfire they were in broke down near Cambridge so they spent the day in Cambridge and missed their trip into Paris. They got to the race and had a great time and saw Graham Hill win in the Matra.
Sounds a bit like my trip last year...lost the clutch slave cylinder! The only and most important factor, was I only got 1 mile from home when it let go! At least that gave me the chance to limp home and change car! Wasn't the same without my TVR though.
I feel for your friend, i wouldn't want to be left like that in the middle of nowhere!

My water pump went at the circuit.. had the car trailed home and flew home myself..I feel for your friend, i wouldn't want to be left like that in the middle of nowhere!
There was me hoping to show off and I'd sprayed the car in Gulf colours.. and it was squealing like a pig .. had the bonnet off around the corner from Arnage .. trying to hammer the water pulley back on..
Managed that and got back to the camp site .. mission accomplished
just just called the breakdown number..I made it all the way to Le Mans in my Triumph 2.5PI...just
Nothing like a front suspenssion ball joint failing - top speed was limited to 40MPH for left hand turns/50MPH for straight/right hand turns.
Thanksfully we had someone coming down on the Friday who could bring a pair of replacement joints, then just had to use the breakdown cover to get trailered to a garage to swap them (and a very nice garage it was - while they were working I just wandered around looking at the 4 Ferrari/6 Jag. E-type/2 Aston/etc in the workshops for restoration).
I can recommend Provost Automobiles Le Mans (on N138/St Sartha roundabout) if anyone in a classic car has problems!

Last year on my way down to LeMans the Supercharger belt broke on my Jaguar XKR taking out one of the oil lines to the oil cooler. Car was transported to Provost. I had a friend bring a new belt and an oil line bypass as fitted to the XK8. Provost refused to fit it as it was not for the XKR and insisted in ordering the correct lines (all of them then it only needed one replaceing) which took a week and a bill for over £1,000.If they had fitted my bits I would have had the car the next day and used if for the weekend and got home on the Monday to finnish the jod then at home at less costs.
I feel that they just took advantage of my situation to make a killing at my expence.
Kev, thanks for posting this up, have only just seen it. The 'stang was repaired and returned to Sandy within 24 hours and the breakdown company were the mutts. The cover is with the RAC through AON classic cover. £40 per year.

Err does anyone with a car, especially an old one, go abroad in it without comprehensive breakdown cover?
