The final statistics of the Classic

Interesting article in the local paper today. Petersport get a grant of £60,000 from the county council here to put on the event and it is well worth it for the money it brings to the area. By far the greatest portion of the tickets sold were to the english and all the bars and restaurants praised the behaviour and said that it was far more relaxed than the 24 hours in June. The people were more appreciative and spent more at table, drinking wine rather than beer. Over 80,000 tickets (not far off £3 million in total) were sold and the proceeds are split 50/50 between the ACO and Petersport. It is estimated that the total spent by spectators was in the region of £5 million during the week and weekend. The question was raised as to whether this should turn into an annual event and it seems the jury is out on the subject. The only complaint was from the restaurant on the Mulsanne at the family village - the police blocked off entry to the site so people couldn't watch the cars from behind the chicken wire. Just thought you'd like to know the local take on the matter.
Bi annual please. And keep it at least a month away from the 24hours.
I know that there are a number of us who would relish the prospect of camping at LM for 2 weeks straight for motoring nivana but the bosses might get a touch upity.
Add to that we really don't need the international morrons staying around and wrecking it.
"The right crowd and no crowding" is far better when the wrong crowd is those who are only in it for the beer as a reality, rather than a joke!

The gossip we heard at the Classic from people who are part of the permanent Lemans scene was that Forula One could be on it,s way (eventually) to Lemans, and that there have been some interesting land purchases in the area, any truth in this ? Oh, and a big Thankyou to Travel Destinations for a cracking job and for showing their commitment by actually being there (under canvas) including their MD, well done Andrew and crew.

Personally I think this would be a disaster; i) you would get the beer bellied idiots hanging around simply because it would be easier than going home and ii) being once every two years means that whilst they may hear about something called "The Classic" they inevitably forget over the course of the ensuing 24 months leaving it enjoyable for the normal motorsport enthusiasts. molestrangler said:

Travel Destinations????? Qu'est qui ce passe ici. Je pense que vous avez une relationship speciale avec le veille dry crotch qui habite dans le petit village une peu nord de Le Mans. Je suis tres desole pour apprendre que cette vielle cheval et vous est fini comme une item.J'espere qui vous prendrai une autre madame dans le region si seulement pour une weekend chaque annee. Je can recommend le madame dans le brasserie pres de la roundabout en Arnage. Elle va bien!!!

Je ne completely prenez votre drift cocker, mais if vous est hinting a une relationship unatural vous est cruising pour une bruising.
Le village "Nob de Brie" est une bastione de bonne vie mais le maire est ne pas all il seems, il est un tranny qui aidee les fillettes quand elles are busy. Mais any bateau dans un tempete.
L'annee prochain je prenez le graisse de axle, dry crotch est un statement sous.

Now let's scotch one rumour shall we? Formula 1 is NOT coming to Le Mans. The Conseil General (county council) have specifically said no as have the ACO. The cost of circuit modifications and the total expense make it a non starter. Look at the Silverstone/Donington debate as an example.

Circuit des Ramparts is a fantastic event. I have only been to the Sunday races and although it is not the fastest circuit you will encounter, the close proximity to the action and surrounding buildings add to the sense of speed. The highlight for me is the 60s - 70s sport scar race. There are two Polybai team mates in 911s that knock corners off each other in practice. Last year one won the race from the back of the grid, after failing to set a time in practice. Passing on such narrow streets with no run-off areas requires plenty of skill. Type 37 Bugattis do not really do it for me, but again these guys have got lots of guts on such an unforgiving circuit.By the way the LM Story takes place on the alternate years on the Bugatti Circuit. Not as good as the Classic and extremely wet in 2007!

Don't you just wonder when people start denying things,the ACO are not the most reliable of bodies when it comes to being good to their word and changing your mind is the national sport.Now let's scotch one rumour shall we? F1 is, as we know, a huge money machine. If the poison dwarf said, "You can have it for a gauranteed 15 years as from 3 years time", I think they would, I think the money would not be an issue and as for the right location, well....................................money is the most powerfull driver.
As regards the GP possibility, the ACO are dependant on the Conseil Général for funds so no dice. It won't happen.
As regards the Circuit des Remparts at Angouleme, I've been there since the early 1990's and frankly find it fun but not real racing. When the race "stops" for a car to do a three point turn to take a hairpin for example, I find it amusing but not racing. When a Ferrari owner we christened "Monsieur Nanette" is sitting in pit lane waiting to take part and his mechanic is cleaning the car with the obvious brush it ain't racing either, especially when he toured round and his mechanic postulated that it was because he had drum brakes! In the golden years drivers got paid to turn up by the Conseil Général including hotel costs but today they pay all their own expenses but it isn't really a race, more a demo. Off from the pits, down past the town square, down the hill past the cinema, round the bottom and up the ramparts, then the straight along side the church and that's it. It is fun, but don't expect much real action.

A bit late to answer, but I have been to Angouleme for the last 2 years and going again this year.IT IS A REAL FAMILY event, not a beer fest!
Feels very croweded as there is not much room to be honest.
Lots of local French families come out for the races on Sunday, so "Beer Belly Bloke" WOULD get arrested if he causes problems!
Parking is a nightmare! Uless you have something special and can get into the Saturday rally (about 400Euro!).
Geeting a Sunday resturant lunch is difficult because of the number of people there!
Hotels are probably booked by now anyway, but there are two parts to the town, good up the Rampart end and not so good like all towns everywhere.
Lots of Brits in the races to support though!
