annorak fact......
herbert linge turned 80 in june..
never heard of him....
well he drove the camera car in the 1970 race, so all the on-board action was from his car during that race, camera mounted on porsche 908...
actually finished 9th overall...
no digital cameras in those days....well done herbert.

I bought a great book several years back called A French Kiss with death, which details the making of the film and there's an annecdote on there about one of the drivers who was hired for the filming of sequences after the race coming round Indianapolis at high speed and finding a 'body' on the road.
After swerveing to avoid it and bringing the car to a stop he ran back to check.
The 'body' turned out to be Stve McQueen, with a camera trying to get some low level action shots as the cars came round the turn.

Steve was a genuine Hero.

I've heard the story reported by 1960Zody above, but always beleived the incident to have taken place at (the old) maison blanche. The driver (Derek Bell), arrived back in the pits, absolutely furious that he'd come across this lunatic lying in the road, without warning,at 170mph+ only to be told that it was Steve McQueen!

Now I'll have to re-read the book.... :-)
