Nurburgring 24

After a few good years at Le Mans it's now time for a change!
Looking to do the Classic event in 2010 and the Ring 24 in 2009.
I'm after some advice on maybe taking the Caterham 7 to the Ring race weekend and camping then staying on for a few laps myself.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

You can turn up and pay for camping on the gate. Good idea to arrive on Thu to get a decent pitch (locals start arriving on Monday but there will be room left later in the week). The Nordschleife should open up on the Tuesday evening after the race.

What's the atmosphere like at the camp sites is it like Le Mans re noise,safety of parked cars and of course toilet facilities?

Wouldnt mind doing this myself at some point. But know sod all about the event / camping etc.

Atmosphere is incredible. Much more down to earth than Le Mans, not sure if that is the correct way to describe it but as an example you won't see any lambos or porsches up in the campsites. Its more like mint mk1 sciroccos or golfs, beetles and buses, reconditioned army jeeps, 80s opels and that sort of thing. The locals bring loads of scaffholding and make precarious grandstands covered in neon. There is a hell of a lot of drinking but its all very good natured. Toilets in the campsites are fine but there are no showers. It's proper camping, just turn up and find a spot amongst the trees. Mountains behind you, Nordschleife in front

The short of it is that you turn up and pay, but as it's per person it can end up being more than at Le Mans. I'm excited to be going to the ring 24hr next year. Went to the classic but was a little dissapointed with the races. I know I wouldn't like the proper lm 24 having read plenty of stories covering the louts that show up. I'm hoping the ring is the real deal.

The atmosphere in the Nring campsites can get pretty wild. Plenty of Bitburger consumed by the fans but it doesn't tend to fuel the loutish behaviour witnessed at Le Mans. The race is a real blood and guts affair with casualties aplenty. It's not uncommon to have a car roll, get patched up and re enter the race hours later!

IMO I would try and make it the main Le Mans event. No one writes in to say how great the 200,000 real fans are, just the few tts!!!.

This year will be my 14th year and i'm still loving it.

couldn't agree more! only going to be my 5th next year but hopefully i'll still be going for many years to come. The real fans far out number the morons and it's easy to stay away from them!

After 14 years of LM including pre qual weekends and every Classic I'm off to N24 next year. Can't wait, hopefully it will be like LM was in the 1990's..

As far as I know the RLM commentary will just be via the web won't it? Still very useful though. Some more good news is that Audi have revealed their racing version of the R8 that'll take part in the N24. It looks pretty stunning! http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/...

I agree with whitebaron, most of the louts can be avoided, I've been going since 2001 and not been to Houx roundabout on Friday night yet. the afternoon "mad Friday" experience is much tamer, but you dont even need to see any of that either.

I also agree with WhiteBaron. I've been going since 1996 nearly every year and never seen anything threatening from so called chavs etc. Mind you I stay away from the locations known to be targets etc. Neither do I camp, I sleep in my car in a car park.

Don't give up because of the negatives you read, there are so many more positives about Le Mans.
