Anybody taking walkie talkies with em.

As per title anyone usually take walkie talkies for when driving down to lemans?

Our two car group have just bought some to talk to each other instead of the mobiles.

So I was thinking if anyone else is taking then and what channel you tend to use the most, to get some banter going on the way down and when there.

or do you just scan channels for people on route.

the eight cars that are in our convoy all have them, not sure of the what band we'll be on yet, usually figure that out when we firstn get them.

Same, been taking walkies for past 3 years. Makes negotiating petrol stops and toilet breaks much easier. We usually just use channel 1, but change if we end up talking to a French taxi driver in the middle of Calais.

it is good fun having a scan as you hit the payage as well, see who else you can pick up.

Or make sure everyone in your group is on Vodafone, who have just announced they are scrapping roaming charges so calls from English Vodafones will be charged at local rates/will use bundled minutes. - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/05/14/vodafone_r...

Nope all on o2 im affraid..

Ive also got an iphone aswell so will have to make sure roaming isnt on or there will be a big bill for me when i get back.

Yup, our convoy will probably be using them. No idea what channel, whatever works best usually!

Most of the walkie talkies only have a realistic mile or so range so chatting to other groups may be a bit optimistic.

Very handy between yourselves though. try to use a channel plus sub-channel i.e 4.3

This is true so we went for Motorola ones that are ment to be 5km so they should be ok i think, not tested them out as yet though.

Ill be taking a radio, they all work on PMR band, i think they only have around 5 channels but the range when moving is less than a mile, good for convoys though.

Took 4 down between 4 cars last year. I find that they easily get out of reach of each other reception wise. Get to near to Le Mans and you start interrupting Taxi services.

Think you will find that most of them come straight out of the box and talk to other handsets, obviously you can then change them to a different frequency.

Cool. I'd not heard about that.

Will still take walkie talkies to talk to non Vodafoners in our convoy. As has been said despite a claimed 5km range they are not usable for anywhere near that, but close up they are better than shouting at each other as you frantically need to stop for petrol.
