Can we camp with a coach?

Morning all,

A few of us are already gearing up for 2010 (bit early but what the hell) and were thinking of buying a big coach - 57seater type, remove all seats and create the mother of all campervans. does anyone have any experiance of this? Would we get camping etc?

On Ebay there are coaches sub 2K which are tempting.

So is it just a stupid idea or could it work?

It was done in 2007 in Houx Annexe. Not sure how many camping passes you'd need for one of those, though. Probably best to ask someone at the ACO, or contact 1st Tickets or someone like that who could get an answer for you.

Seen some monster camper vans down there but they tend to be in their own area rather than on a normal camp site.

eurotunnel / ferry would be a touch pricey? but then i suppose if 10 of you go then the price per person is probably less than in a car?

There is a new area for Coaches opposite the entrance to Beausejour however, whether you can then camp around your bus is a question I don't know the answer to. Won't someone still need a PCV licence for the vehicle as well?

Not if is not for hire or reward - no fare paying passengers. Also can be taxed as P/LG and driven on a car licence.

Quite why you'd want to is another matter. Because you can, I suppose. Saw a red Routemaster in MB a couple of years back (before pitch allocation). That was quite cool, bedrooms upstairs and galley/living room downstairs!

The area opposite the entrance to BSJ looked like a bus park last year, but it is shown as a camping area for buses on the official brochure this year. It is known as Karting Sud and camping passes are 147euro. There are a few sites offering 105m2 pitches as well as 35m2 pitches at around the same price as the Karting Sud price (MB,HA,KN & BSJ), but they are intended for 3 cars, 2 campers upto 7 metres long or 1 camper upto 11 metres long (A bus is classed as less than 15metres). The brochure also states that buses and trucks are not allowed on campsites unless by special dispensation.

There was a routemaster on Bleu Sud in 2006 and passes that year were only for 35m2, but not marked pitches.

Well i was planning on getting my licence anyway but if i dont need it, thats a bonus.
theres not real reason for it apart from why not? Would be a nice camper inside with Huge BBQ's sliding out of the luggage compartments - whats not to like?

Cheers for the help though - I think we will keep looking into it over the next few months and see what comes up. Its a bit of the kid comming out in me, every one wanted to be a bus/lorry driver when there little and here my chance!

for the license it will depend on how old you are.

If you passed your test after jan 1st 2007 you license covers you on things only up to 3500kgs. You'll need to do an extra test to drive stuff up to 7500kgs.

If you passed before then you are good to go.

There was a coach on BSJ last year with about 10 lads in, sound system, huge amount of cooking equipment and stacks of cooling devices all fitted into the luggage area. I'm sure one of them must view this forum and I'm sure they'll be able to tell you how many plots they paid for on the site
