Numbers Graphics on cars?

In the back of my mind, I thought numbers on the doors in the UK was dodgy but i could not think why, just something someone mentioned last year. Any idea why this is?I still have the numbers on the doors and not been pulled yet!

The Motor Sports Association have a set of rules and regulations that competition license holders must comply with in order to keep their competition license. One of the regulations is that competition numbers must not be shown on public roads. In theory this means completely removed or covered over, but competitors driving to/from events in road cars routinely just cross them out with some tape to show they aren't applicable. I believe the reason for the rule is to make it clear that the car is not involved in a competitive event on public roads. This rule only affects people who hold an MSA competition license. There is no regulation or law applicable to the general public that prohibits cars from displaying 'racing' numbers. But if you do ever see a car with racing numbers on, you can be pretty sure it's a wannabe racer and not the real thing, because competition license holders are the only people who *can't* display racing numbers on public roads.
