First time Le Mans-er. What should I take?
Also, a bit O/T, but can anyone suggest a casual journey time from Calais to La Sarthe if I'm taking it easy and possibly getting lost en-route.

- Camera
- Wet weather gear just in case
- Sunglasses and sun cream in case we're lucky
- Camera
- Reading material for the quiet bits (I'm there all week)
- A European road map
- Sat nav
- Car kit - rave jacket, GB sticker, possibly headlamp converters
- Usual clothes, wallet, phone etc.
As for the route down. It's simple enough just follow the signs will get you there on the motorway, keep you eyes peeled around Rouen in case you miss them, the one tricky sign says "Le Mans suivre Caen" whick just means 'follow signs to Caen' otherwise you end up in Paris.
If you want to follow the classic N138 route, it's not even called that anymore than in typical French style all signs to Le Mans will send you back to the autoroute. If you're lucky the "Le Mans par R.N." (Route Nationale) will go all the way but you might need to map read between towns en route.

Second what to take...what you driving/where you camping?
If you are in a Se7en the only escentials are:
- tickets
- passport
- credit card
- car keys
Hell, it's about all you have space for and the Carrefour/SuperU/Decathlon will provide everything else you need to a week (by which I mean it's cheap and will just about last 7 days so you're not bothered about leaving it behind).
If you've got something bigger then... well last year the Judge Dread guys took a whole kitchen - including the kitchen skin...and three kitchen walls.

Driving licence both parts, car insurance, V5 and MOT if applicable
A hat is always a good idea especially if it is going to be sunny as sunstroke and a hangover is never a good combination.......which reminds me take basic first aid stuff, plasters for blisters and small cuts etc., savlon, bug spray, aspirin etc.
Lots of cash but keep it distributed about your person so if a pick pocket nicks your wallet you still have some beer tokens, make sure your mobile works overseas and that if it pay as you go it has plenty of credit.
Sleeping bag, a couple of towels, wash kit, toilet rolls, a cooler if nothing else to protect stuff from insects eating your food!

Agree about the wetwipes!

Ear plugs and an airbed with pump...if you want to get any sort of sleep, not much chance I know!
Spare set of car keys to give to your mate in case you lose yours
Doofer thing for going through the tolls without having to queu
Duck Tape..always useful
