How does this peage business work?

Typically you take a ticket from a machine, then at some point later in the journey you arrive at a toll booth where a person will take your money, you don't really need to speak as the value is displayed on a readout, although it nice to use the pleasantries.

Cool. Walking round it is! Do they take card (and if so how much French do you need to know to enter your pin and is there any chance of problems with a UK Visa card)? And if not, do they give change for notes?
Can someone give me a rough idea how much I might need each way if I was to cover the whole journey to/from Calais on the autoroute?
This is all very exciting. I've only ever covered the shortest possible distance through France on the E40 to get to Belgium and beyond before.

That's why I'm not using them this time 
The one on the left is for tags. The other 2 are credit card only. Other signs include a hand putting money into a basket (like on the Dartford bridge - you just toss the coins in) and a man with money in his hand (the manned kiosks)
eta - PIN not required, usually its ticket in, wait a sec for it to calculate, then card in the same slot. It takes a second or two and spits it out - don't drop it. This is embarrassing.

If you have dropped your credit card you should on no account open the door without 1st checking that the kirb is low enough not to damage the door when you throw it open angrily.
Personally I'd never be in a group where such things could happen....

It should come with a cradle/mount that you can stick to your windscreen if you want to. Mine does seem directional but if you hold it the way round it would be if stuck to the screen, it should be ok.not for the next question.... Where and how do you fix the transponder thing to the windscreen? UK passenger side or drivers side?
Does it matter which way round it goes ?

Mine has been up behind the mirror for years. It works through the darkened band on a Merc so don't worry. However, I once snapped a barrier off when it went wonky. The télépéage thingy worked but the barrier came down quickly - too quickly - behind my head but in front of the D type fin and head rest. Ah well!not for the next question.... Mine is mounted behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side.
When using a hire care I simply hold it up against the windscreen.
It is worth remembering that the peage pass lanes are generally on the far left of the "Gare de Peage" - make your move early if there is loads of traffic as you may struggle to get across to the left lane.

Might have to come over and say hello and quietly weep into my Kronenburg lamenting the passing of mine.
So basically I always want to aim for the one with the one with the man handing out a speeding fine on the logo?
BTW How much further is it avoiding the toll roads? I know this is a whole other can of worms, but as a first timer (and trying to make rapid progress legally in a boring car that I don't gain much gratification from being in) I thought the toll roads would be quickest and easiest.
