Recommend places to visit/stop on the way from calais

Seriously, depends on your ferry time as you may as well leg it down to Lemans, its a fair old drive.

Thiepval for the monument to the missing, very moving place, not much off the beaten track, if you're a Brit you really have to see it to get some idea of the numbers, staggering.

More so is Delville wood, if slightly further off course. The South African memorial is there, somehow much more atmospheric.

Keep meaning to go there, as one of my relatives (I think it was my great grandfather's brother - great uncle ??) has his name on there somewhere. From the brief bit of research I've done I think he was killed on the day that tanks were first used in WW1.

You also need to go to Delville as well then , the tank action was very close to there.(very sad ex-tanky engineer!)

I can highly recommend a visit to the gigantic underground bunker built by the Nazis in WW2 using slave labour under a hill just south of St. Omer, about 20 minutes from either Boulogne or Calais. It was used to build, prepare and launch the V2 rockets that were used against London and were the first proper ballistic missiles. Very good audio visual presentations, headsets in English, and much about current day rocketry. Decent toilets/coffee shop etc. You would need to allow at least 2 hours. agree with La coupole and thiepval, have done a couple of trips that include these. Anything on the Somme is worth a visit - we liked Beaumont hammel where the canadians fought and vimy ridge is a must, the statue is stunning and you can go down the trenches..... The Somme is worth a weekend blat on it's own, as is Ypres, great roads, moving sites and good food.....
