AS title,
Who has expirience of taking this route pls, and if so, which way did you go?
Have had a look online, and it seems most of the guides tend to suggest to go right to get on the A28 asap, but I was thinking of heading directly south from the port (once accross the river) and picking the A28 further down, after a nice drive thats more x-country...
Thoughts?

Very nice route. Leave ferry across roundabout right at lights, keep in left lane to go under the underpasses (if you are in a car, not a high vehicle).
Go across the bridge (5 euros, car) look out for blue sign Le Mans and take that heading towards Alencon on the D438. I take the A28 for the last part to save going through the city of Le Mans

I've done the Le Havre run a few times and it's great getting off the overnight ferry all fresh and ready to go with all day to go a couple of hundred miles.
Once over the bridge I jump off the main road and go through Pont-l'Eveque that start taking the smaller roads that take my fancy, via either Lisieux or Valseme and Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives to Trun and food. From there head to Argentan to Alencon and the old N138 to Le Mans.
If you take a wrong turn, take the next one. If you're lost/running late whip the satnav out to get back on track.
I can recommend a diversion through the Foret D'Ecouves, just south of where the D26 crosses the D908 with a choice of some dead straight, deserted minor roads to bomb along or the nice run of bends on the D26 it's self. Somewhere in there is a really random little junction with a tank and plaque telling you how the French won WW2.

If you go to www.viamichelin.com, stick in Le Havre as your departure point and Le Mans as your arrival point, and then select "Sightseeing" from the options menu below it, it will give you a sightseeing route with directions, as well as toll costs (where applicable) fuel estimates, and recommending places to stop along the way.
