Just read a post on another thread by someone who wants to go to the big race next year, but his/her mates aren't interested.

I'm in a pretty similar position (I know its 51 weeks away!) about wanting to go, but not having no mates who would also go, so what is it like visiting on your own? Is it as daunting as it seems?

I'd probably try book the PH campsite if that makes any difference.

Where in UK are you? I'd suggest trying to tag along with a local car club. That way you can met them a few times before heading off to joust with the gendarmes.

I was going with my ex for a few years, on our own, then hooked up with NYTVRCC, been going with the same bunch of, now, mates ever since.

I'm in Yorkshire and don't really own anything special like a TVR

I was tempted to just Drive down this year, but having a job interview on the friday put paid to that idea.

Well, we went via Hull from York/Leeds area and from Tuesday night back on the Monday night ferry. Not all TVRs, a Ghey TT and a SEAT amongst other metal/plastic. Generally a more the merrier approach applies. Planning tends to happen around the turn of the year.


Keep in touch towards the dark nights if you can't convince mates that it is the way forward.

There is only one place to be in June.

what about going for one of the hosting agents? if you pick one that other PHers use, you'll hopefully be able to hook up with or at least share a beer with some; and/or find some other guys you can wander the circuit with?

(speculation rather experience as my times there have been as part of a group of friends or at least friends of friends...)

I shall attempt to resurect this thread around the festive season. In the mean time I shall attempt to persuade them it is the way forward.

As I said in the other thread that you have read, I went for the first time this year, not knowing anyone, but since I really wanted to go, I just got on with the planning myself. Drove down and went over by train, already pre-booked Tetre Rouge campsite. Everyone was very friendly on the site and on the circuit. There is so much to see and do that the time flies by; I never for one minute felt 'lonely'. I was offered food and drink by my neighbours and spoke to loads of people. It is just a fantastic experience and one that I am already planning again for next year (and yes on my own again too!!!) I am also going to the le Mans Series in September at Silverstone and British Grand Prix, both camping on my own. In other words, not daunting at all.

Whilst I have been with big groups for the last two years, I have tended to do my own thing some of the time - since we have different interests. Randoms have always talked to me when I've been on my own, and I have ended up having a great time with them both years. In fact, some of the group I went with this year were the randoms from last year! If you are happy and confident in your own company - go for it; there's plenty to do

You could offer your passenger seat on here nearer the time, for an instant companion

All I would say is that when I camped, many years ago, there were always a number of blokes on their own and, due to the close proximity of the pitches, conversation and joining in was pretty much inevitable. Go with one of the many organisers and you will meet up with a bunch of like minded people in a very short space of time.

Being a tyke will help too as talking to strangers is in the genes I think. I met my oldest mate about forty years ago while standing at the front door to the village pub in East Keswick on Christmas morning. Bloke walks out from round the side of the pub and says " you daft bugger, if you want a drink you'll need to use the side door - they never open the front one" and we have been mates since that day, along with half the blokes in the village of my age and a big chunk of Harrogate too.
