Best thing I heard at Le mans.
Discussion
Just a little thing really, the best thing you heard at Le Mans? Whether it's a car, a quote or a cat meowing.
Cars are obvious for me, but it'd be the corvettes.
But my favourite quote i heard was. We were talking to Tim harvey (apparently he does btcc or something? I seriously had no idea who we were talking to.) and he described Le Mans as a british race held in france. I really liked the sound of that. Whether it's something he's heard someone else say, or his own thoughts I don't know. But I did like it.

I think, but could well be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, nor the last...
), that the origal comment about it being a British race held in France may even date back to the days of the Bentley Boys back in the '30s. And it may even have been uttered by a Frenchman when the British teams were dominating the race.Either way, it's still a very apt description of Le Mans, both in terms of the teams and fans who still flock to the circuit each year.
Best thing I heard all weekend ? The spooling turbos of the Porsche 935s, while stood at Arnage at night, watching the flames from the glowing exhausts. Just a guttural, unadulterated sound which I associated with power. And lots of it.
Actually, on second thoughts the best thing I've EVER heard at Le Mans was a set of rechargeable hair clippers!
Short story - 2AM Saturday, a rather drunk (as we all were) Scotsman borrows some rechargeable hair clippers and starts at a #1 with a full front-to-back cut.
Please note that at no point were the following discussed:
1) How much charge was left on the clippers.
2) If the owner had the charging lead with him.
BZZZZZZZZ.
BZZZZZZZZ.
BZZZzzzzz.
bzz.......
The sound of charge-less clippers coming from a man now sporting an inverse mohican, THAT'S the best thing I've ever heard at Le Mans

Funny you should have started this thread. Aside from the roar of Plateau 3 go past the grandstand en masse, which gave me goosebumps, the best thing I heard was this.
I woke up in my tent on Saturday (?) to hear the neighbours say: 'He's shot himself'. One of their group sounded shocked, and said: 'Sorry?'. Again: 'He's shot himself'. I thought: what the hell has happened overnight, and what am I going to find when I leave the tent - a load of cordoning off? Then the neighbour piped up: 'The guy they were looking for [Raoul Moat]'. That was one way of waking up!

The astons..... oh my best ever only matched by our friend Peter in the Lambo in 2008
the corvettes are nice though not quite up there
the groan of the french on the sunday... nice

but Radio Le Mans quote from Quali on thursday night summed it up......
" There is no place on this planet I would rather be than here right now....." nearly brought tears to my eyes....

you should put that in the photo competition
We stay in a village called Malicorne Sur Sarth each year. There was a vintage Bentley parked in the village square. By coincedence, another vintage Bentley came trundling down the road and pulled up outside the bar we were sitting in front of. Old gent hops out with his co-pilot for a drink. Turns out the owner of the other Bentley was in the bar at the same time. He gets up and says to the newly arrived Bentley owner...
"I say old bean, are you money? I feel I know you."
Brilliant.
Unfortunately at the time, I was in the loo, but my pals where in fits of laughter. Sums up the notalgia of Le Mans though.

I know this might sound a but sad but...
...as with quite a few people on here (I'm guessing), my first experience of Le Mans was watching the Steve McQueen film as a child and, since that moment, I always wanted to go and experience it myself.
For some reason, there's one moment in the film that has always stood out in my mind. It's the part at the start of the race where there's a series of track-side shots of the cars approaching from the distance and roaring past the camera. On one of the shots, just before the cars scream past, there's the sound of a small bird singing from the armco.
Anyway, fast-forward 30 years, I finally made it to Le Mans (this year's Classic). And the first sound I heard the moment I opened the car door on arrival...a small bird singing...
A trivial incident really but, for some reason, a very poignant moment for me.
Actually, scratch that. The best thing I've heard at Le Mans was my mate saying, "I've just been to that garage in Arnage and got some bottles of water...here you go, they're still ice-cold...!!!"

It's years back now, but in those days Radio Le Mans was more or less run by amateurs who couldn't tell a Porsche from a Pescarolo. As one car came into the pits, the commentator asked the lady in the pits who was the driver. Her reply was immortal:-
" Not sure, but he's got Shoei on his 'elmet".
