We are planning next years trip and are going in a Motorhome. We were at the Houx this year and noticed loads of space available, possibly a 1/4 of the Houx was empty yet apparently it was sold out yonks before the event. Strange. Could we have turned up on the thursday before the race and bought Houx tickets from the ACO ? there was sooooo much space. We had allocated plots so had no choice where we were (not complaining as they were good) If we dont buy tickets in advance, I just know we wont get any on the day but this year they could have sold perhaps 100 more plots.
Has anyone done this ? turned up without a campsite ticket and bought one on the day ?

I understand. You can buy from the ACO on the official Le Mans website. Someone told me in another thread that ticketing goes live early October (I can't recall the exact date) 
I haven't purchased camping from them before, so I'm not sure how it works - but I'm sure someone else will be along shortly to advise

We have been going for 7 years and have done that 4 or 5 times before but now buy from agents such as 1st Tickets. All the Houx sell out straight away so we were hoping to buy some on the day if anyone knows the answer ? I had some ACO membership questions, and got lots of prompt replies from a really helpful lady. She also explained that they have an in-house English teacher too, who translates emails as necessary - so you can ask in English, and you will get a reply in the same
details aren't up on the main lemans.org website yet, but if you contact someone like Brian at http://www.1st-tickets.co.uk/ he will advise and reserve your camping spots but you have to be quick for the best places (actually the best spots are already reserved!)

I think you were looking at Houx Annexe. I didn't see many free spaces at all. ACO did have fewer numbered plots this year compared to other years, but that was down to the potential for flooding. And they left out the bottom 'walled' field purposely, so as to re-grow a more level paddock. Probably a larger number than normal paid but didn't show up. We were even bumped into a corner, as our numbered pitch had been absorbed by a big group taking 3 pitches and they accidentally (or maybe on purpose) started their pitching on the wrong side of the numbered tag, leaving us only the corner (not a proper pitch) and too far from the leccy. At this time there were no other pitches available on Houx. Hence being squeezed into the corner of our block of pitches. Really don't understand where you got the "1/4 empty" from, unless you got there on the monday after the race

Yeah James is right, they don't actually activate the pages for booking until the tickets are available - they will put a link on the home page to the booking pages. Keep your eyes peeled because they dont exactly make it obvious. If you email them they will tell you when the web will be activated, and i think from memory they will say something something like, 'alternatively email us direct and we will book for you'.
Then they send you a letter confirming! You have to send them your credit card details on an email which i always thought was dodgey, but it worked. You could prob fax them instead. As i said though we were never fast enough for the Houx (usually still arguing between us about something), but they dont give priority to any of the agents - well thats what they told me!!

I was actually one of the ones stopping with Vauxhall VXR Power. First off, they had booked quite a large area in advance, we probably only had half of our area filled but it was booked by Vauxhall so unfortunately no one else could use this bit. However the area in front of us (closest to the fence by the road) had quite a few spaces and people picthed up leaving plenty of room. The area next to us (near where the PH fire engine was) was reasonably busy and most of the grass strip in the middle was taken. There was however quite a bit of room near the grass bank that no one used at all. I'm not sure if this was deliberately kept clear for whatever reason, whether a large group backed out at the last minute (I hear that Jaguar did) or if there was some other reason. Also there are quite a few tracks through Houx so the grass area to camp on is quite limited (certainly at our end). I presume it is usually busier down at the Vauxhall end?
