Beausejour campsite - advice needed

Hi everyone,
Im heading to Le Mans 24 hour next year for my first time, and have booked a pitch at Beausejour campsite, after changing from Bleu Nord (as I heard that was a hell-pit?).
We're planning on taking a 4x4, with mountain bikes, and simply arriving on the Thursday, parking up, and then leaving the car there until Sunday/Monday. I have heard the driving around Le Mans over the weekend isnt advised. Is cycling a decent way of getting around? I have read about the 'Great British Welcome' at Saint Saturnin. How far away is that?
What else would anyone recommend we MUST see whilst we're there?
Anyway, I would really appreciate any advice anyone would have, and some idea of how long it will take to walk to the circuit etc.

In that case, where would you recommend? I feel another call to 1st tickets coming on to change campsite again!
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated coming from someone who knows nothing about it, and at the moment, isnt 100% looking forward to it! Im sure it will be fine, and the atmosphere of the LM will far outweigh any campsite issues, but I dont really want to stitch my dad up with a crappy campsite that i've booked for us as his 60th birthday present!

Im sure it will be fine, and the atmosphere of the LM will far outweigh any campsite issues, but I dont really want to stitch my dad up with a crappy campsite that i've booked for us as his 60th birthday present!

Some people will tell you its the greatest site but this is my opinion. . . . .
Avoid Beausejour is my advice. We went there in 2007 and it was full of idiots - should be re-named Chavesejour. The idiots were not just from the UK either. Some were driving a Mitsubishi EVO flat out inches from peoples tents at 2am - could have killed someone. There were a number of thefts in Beausejour that year and because of the rain, it took ages to get out sunday evening especially if you are a long way in, you will que.
Beausejour is cheap for a reason. It's in a crap location and quite a treck to the grandstand/start finish/Village area and good viewing points. Toilets and showers are rubbish.
Cycling is a great option we are taking ours next year but lock them up, both wheels, to an imovable object where-ever you go especially at the camp-site.
I love Le Mans but would stop at home if Beausejour was my only option. Sorry to thoes who like it but thats how we found it in 2007

Steve, we have been to Houx, Karting Nord and Technoparc. Our favorite was Technoparc but they have stopped doing it so I would suggest the Houx if you can get in. Karting Nord was good too. We stayed there 2008 but beware you could get caught out unless you camp the far end near to the Kart circuit thats where most the brits end up and its the best part of the site. It is noisy as you are very close to the track. Ground is hard and it can get very dusty near to the outer road. Showers/toilets are ok. Have a look on Google Maps and see the bit at the bottom of the picture. There are some trees and a triangle. Try to camp there. We got our tickets through 1st Tickets and asked for that part of the site and thats where they put us. Good lads.

).Thanks everyone for the comments so far. I'd much rather be further away from the track as we can use our bikes to get there, than be in a field full of chavs, but as someone quite rightly posted, its all about who we pitch up next to.
If there are marshalls directing us to a specific area, then I guess we get what we're given, but i guess theres the possibility that we'll get a choice, and in that case, i'll try and squeeze in between the Veyron and Zonda Owners clubs...I hear they are a respectable bunch!
Does anyone know if they were guiding people to specific areas of BSJ last year?

bit awkward really as when we got there it was dead, friday it was choca block.
some chavs rallying about, one nearly hit my megane, we sorted him out though... its a HUGE site so has its good bits and bad. i just hope they sort the enterances out next year as it took me 15 mins to get out, KWs do not like this campsite! any advice u need mail me

Hi, I have been told by 1st-tickets that the pitches ARE limited in size, and hence i've had to buy 2 pitches. There's only 2 of us, a 4x4, and a 6 man tent. Is 2 pitches just a scam?!
BSJ was good for us in 2009, we got speed chills wrist bands so we could use there compound for easy been and food days. Did not have a ny worries with people there or leaving the TVR while we went off. GBW is a drive away from bsj really as its North of Le Mans, but well worth going. Again plenty of parking there and you can skirt around Le Mans from BSJ to get there.

BSJ was ok in 2009 but not too good a couple of years before, it depends on where you are. We were down on the track by the frog pond where it was relatively quiet except when our neighbours blew things up!!!! And yes, the pitches are of a fixed size and you will be directed to them, just take a tape measure to be sure you get the proper size, somebody on here has already mentioned what this is. Wish we had bikes, it's a long way from anywhere except the inside of the entrance to the Porsche Curves.

Timbo, Thanks for the clarification, I'm really looking forward to it. Im also tempted to buy a toilet tent and portable bog online and take these. £20 for a tent, and £30 for a khazi doesnt seem to bad if it means I dont have to queue!! Anyone done that before?

There were some people behind us at BSJ in 2009 with one but bearing in mind our explosive happy neighbours, I'm not so sure that I would have spent that long in there. Personally, I've never found the toilets and showers that bad (I first went in the 70s when it was more hygenic to nip down the road to the railway station for a wash). If you do end up in BSJ there are some toilets etc on the way round to the inner banking at Porsche Curves just before you walk through the woods that seemed ok. Worth having a look round to see where everything is I reckon.

BSJ will be absolutely fine. Lock up anything valuable in the car when you leave - this goes for ALL campsites! - and be clever about when you use the showers. Every fool in the world seems to go to the showers at 9-10am and queues for hours. If you must shower in the morning, take a solar shower and hoist it onto the roof of your car! Otherwise, shower at 3am and climb into your sack all nice and clean!

Like Bleu Nord, the problem with BSJ is it's distance from the village. It's a heck of a long walk.
However, this year there was a free jump-on jump-off bus running between the circuit entrance at Maison Blanche, Porsche Curves, BSJ and Houx.
So you can get around pretty easily if it runs again in 2011.
Don't be put off - you'll have a ball wherever you camp. Treat this year as a "reccy", have a good wander around and use it to decide what you want to do for 2012.
Just make sure you've got decent radio headphones and tune in to Radio Le Mans - 91.2 FM for total 24-hour blow-by-blow race coverage in English.
Year no. 15 for us, and we're still learning!
