Hi does anyone know if you can book tent only pitches in any of the campsties as I wont be coming with a car this year. There alwasy seems to be plenty of space left unoccupied in many of the campsites and I was wondering if its possible to set up a tent there?

Easy, just walk in and pitch a tent - of asked explain your driver has already come in. Any help much appreciated!
They only control access by cars, on pitches other than Houx.

Not a good idea. In doing that they may be taking up someones paid-for pitch who turn up late, they won't be too impressed, and why should anyone pitch for free when everyone else pays ? Cant say I would be too happy if people either side of me just walked in and camped for nothing. We could all do that, park the car somewhere then just walk in for free. Not in the Spirit of Le Mans and a total pi$$ take for all of us who pay. They only control access by cars, on pitches other than Houx.

The only campsite with paid, marked pitches is Le Houx. Everywhere else is a free for all irrespective of a ticket being held - we got there on the Friday afternoon last year and there were no spaces for a motorhome so we ended up in a stewards enclosure for the weekend slap bang next to the dunlop bridge.
The other large campsites such as Beausejour, pincenadere allow camping anywhere and its unregulated and first come first served. You get plenty of idiots with 9 seater transit vans full of crap, roping off huge areas for uncessary tat such as BBQ / beer tents and 5 odd tents for a single notional 'pitch' that a person carrying a small 1 person tent would barely be noticed. If you watch the French they all pitch a tent in the car parks for the Saturday night, or in the woods just outside the track at Tetre rouge.
Besides there are plenty of bits of spare grass around the edges of all of the campsites.

We stayed in Houx Annexe last year and they were marked and numbered as i think most other sites are these days.
regardless...you pays your money and you have your pitch. I'll be parking my car in my space and any tent in the way on arrival day will be squashed pretty quickly by it ;-)

There are marked pitches on every campsite now and has been for at least 4 years. I have seen a few 'fly campers' up by Houx Annexe roundabout but last year they were getting shifted by the plods.
Similarly, I always pay for a parking space in Parking Blanc, which has all the parking areas defined, and each year there are others who simply pitch their tent on a defined space which has been paid for. Causes mayhem when they refuse to move. And when they do move they repitch on the designated lanes for access in and out so nobody can do either. More aggro and flattened tents: it's the only solution.
I find it amazing that the ACO don't police this more thoroughly. After all Parking Blanc spaces don't come cheap.

Yet I arrive with my Parking Blanc screen lable on a Tuesday/Wednesday, get in OK and say ten cars there so park near the entranceI find it amazing that the ACO don't police this more thoroughly. After all Parking Blanc spaces don't come cheap.

They may not all be marked, but they are (should) be paid for !!! It dosen't mean because they are not marked that anyone whoh fancies it can just walk in for free. No-one likes pi$$ taking free-loaders and walking past ACO officials into a campsite without paying is deception and causes problems for all the decent paying fans. Bennno

Ok so compare the difference between a Caterham with a tiny 2 man tent and a transit van full of 9 with 5 tents buying the same camping 'space'? If somebody is on foot and has a small 2 man tent then I am not bothered if they want to camp on the end of my houx pitch space.bennno

You're right: turn up ahead of the weekend with your car and Parking Blanc ticket (with it's reserved space details) and you can park almost anywhere without any trouble until the Saturday. Arriving on the Saturday and finding someone in your space is b****y annoying: you cannot park where you're supposed to, if you park elsewhere you p**s someone else off, and if there's a tent on your assigned space what can you do then? So, whenever this has happened I do the only thing which is to get a marshall to sort it out...always works out in the end, although it should never happen in the first place if the marshalls did their job properly.
By the way, I see that this year you'll not be in T18 and the bar, so enjoy the Arbour !

Benno I have been in MB before and after the pitches were marked out and now camp in Houx.
I would suggest that your comments are still rubbish, because each pitch is 7m x 5m and if you can get 9 blokes, their tents and a minibus in that space, then you are Dr Who's TARDIS AICMFP.
All camping should be paid for, whether it's one bloke in a one man tent or the 9 blokes in their Transit. You may be right, the further afield sites may not be allocated, but that's because they're rarely full and not as popular.
It still does not detract from the fact that everyone should pay, and turning up and pitching on any spare bit of ground is just wrong.
If it happened to my pitch, they'd find out what it would be like to be steam rollered by a Range Rover!!
