My g/f currently runs a Golf V5 and she is wanting a 4x4 instead for the dogs to fit in more comfortably. It would be as a second car as we commute in my Co Car most days - thus the MPG is not a massive issue - the Golf gets around 23mpg about town so something similar would be fine. She has a very short list of Audi or VW. At this price Audi is out, leaving the VW Toureg. I have seen some examples with 80k + about the right price (the mileage isn't that much of an issue as it is a second car) Can anyone shed any light on costs to run, model to go for, maintenance etc? Or any other 4x4 suggestions which might fit the bill?

Cheers!

Why do the dogs care which wheels are driven? Just get an estate - it will be cheaper, faster and more economical for the same money.

Skoda Octavia Scout might be a good half-way solution...

^^ That. Plus the dogs will be able to climb into the back of an estate more esaily than having to jump in and out of a 4x4.

Well I have already shown her a couple of Audi Avants but she likes the higher driving position and doesn't like the estate body shape. (of course you and I know that they are essentially the same shape only with higher ride height) Deep down though I wouldn't mind having a 4x4 for a while now I have looked at a couple.

Porsche Cayenne. Early models are sub 10k now I believe. Surely the PH choice?

Porsche yes defo PH choice but in terms of looks I think I prefer the VW, the early Porsches look pretty gauky IMO. Would the running costs be much different?

Subaru Forester. (Though not exactly high driving position)

4x4 's (in the RangeRover,Cayenne etc form) are not ideal dog carriers. Too High and space inside is compromised by wheel arch intrusion.

But she wants one and that no doubt outweighs logic. biggrin

What about the smaller ones like the Jeep Patriot? 2.0 VW diesel engine, so a reasonable degree of practicality

Buyers guide for early Cayennes in this month's EVO mag; didn't really get a glowing report but sounds like the 3.2 should be ok to go with? The suggestion was however that JZM have stopped selling early Cayennes altogether due to the number of issues they have with them... which might question whether or not a Tourag would be a good idea if they share much of the same running gear?

The dogs won't like jumping into a taller vehicle (especially if older dogs) & check the boot size on the towrag its not as big as you think.

If you have dogs an estate is a way better option. Allroads are quite nice & have the "image" she's after

We went for a Freelander for the dogs, It replaced a Saab 95 estate.

The Saab had much more spacein the back but the Freelander is much better on the fields/muddy car parks where we take the dogs. Not a lot of difference on the mpg

Our 2 pointers aged 18months and 5yrs have no probs getting in/out although an old fat lab may have a little more difficulty.

I'd be interested in peoples opinions of the Toureg.

My gf loves 4x4’s and her current Rav 4 is getting a bit old now so she’s after another car. I don’t really get the 4x4 thing unless you need it (i.e. you live in the sticks up a muddy mountain) but hey, each to their own. As I’m the resident car expert in her life she asked me about the Toureg.

It’s the nicest looking 4x4 out there in my opinion but I’ve heard it’s not that great to drive and there are better cars in its class.

I did tell her that I’ve never driven a good VW and I’ve tried a lot of them over the years albeit not the sporting models. I include a Mk3 16v GTi in that ;-) I don't think that's what she wanted to hear as she has her heart set on a Toureg now.

The only thing I can think of that will make her think again is a test drive in a town with very narrow streets. wink

Touraegs are well made, fairly good looking, can cope with a bit of of roading.

Ignore the Octavia loving PH masses and get one!

Our black lab had no issues jumping into a Defender 110. She seems a bit happier jumping into the back of our recently bought T5 California though. Which is AWD...
