Aston Martin Cygnet or MINI Cooper?

Was trawling through the PH Classifieds and noticed you can buy a year old new Aston Martin Cygnet for £18.5k from an Aston Dealership.

Now this got me thinking. Would I rather have this over a new MINI Cooper which costs roughly the same.

Just to be different I would get the Cygnet (prepares to be shot down in flames).

They look fantastic, and I bet that leather-clad cabin feels brilliant. Were it branded properly I'd say do it, but buying that supports the smearing of a fine motoring name. :\

If you're buying it to tell the guys down the pub you've got an Aston, then fair enough (though never offer to give them a lift home).
Otherwise, buy the MINI, it's the better car.

Mini is a miles better car. Any what is a "year old new Aston"?? It's a year and a bit old with 9k miles on it, or second hand is another way of putting it. It's depreciated by a third in it's first year because they never had any underlying demand for them, purely a CO2 exercise.
On the other hand my mate had an IQ and it is a very good car, but for a year old it would be half the cygnet. £9k is a lot of extra cash just so you ass can sit on cow hide!

A new IQ can be had from £10,995 save yourself £8k, using these saving buy some aston badges - these badges will cost you the 8k difference if you get them from AM or about £1.99 from halfords.

It does seem very slow, but they weigh a ton (quite literaly). Not sure how they managed to make it quite so heavy when the Smart is over 250kg lighter.

They don't sell enough cars to be bound by the CO2 averages, so they can't even use that excuse

Is that true? I presumed that was the major reason for doing it. The only other reason being that their customers wanted something smaller for city driving.

I heard it was a co2 exercise which ultimately failed due to the too close affiliation with Toyota. Ultimately there was an item within the product which was not differentiated to a significant enough degree to warrant co2 benefit for AM.

The averages are for everyone, doesn't matter how many cars you sell

If you sell less than 10k and aren't associated to another manufacturer, you still have to get the omissions down.

That sounds familiar. I believe it was originally CO2 motivated but subsequently backfired.

FWIW, I'd be straight in with a MINI Goodwood if I wanted a really posh supermini. We're not far off seeing V8 Vantages for new Cygnet money.
