Mazda 6 - decent used buy?

Trawling through the classifieds and have decided on something with a boot for the golf clubs.
Local guy selling a Mazda 6, unfortunately sold just before we got there, but thought it was a very nice car to look at and a lot of motor for 4k. Having a look online and there are some really nice 2006/7 models, and then a new model in 2008... can anyone tell me is it just a facelift? I know there is a brand new mazda 6 now so am guessing so.
Got my heart set on a manual 2.0 petrol - can anyone advise on the ownership experience? Anything to look out for? Am going for a 2006/7 with no more than 70k. is the estate a good alternative to the hatch? Also would I be better raising the dollars and going for the facelift - I intend to keep this for a good 2-3 years.

What's the diesel issue? I am erring on a petrol anyways, possibly a 2.3 as the mileage won't be big, but I have seen some nice 2.2 diesel cars online?Fantastic VFM.

I had a 2.0 TS on a 56 plate from new...
Cruise, elec windows, parking sensors, digital climate etc
Handled nicely, went well, was comfy and well equipped, the boot is brilliant. Liked a drink if pushed.
Road noise was far more than the Passat I had previously and I have to admit it did irritate me on long journeys. Interior plastic marked a bit easily (the grey bits by the handbrake etc) but the layout was good and very user friendly. The next generation ones I didn't like - felt they'd messed up the dashboard good and proper (mind you I like really the X-type so I'm a bit fuddy duddy!)

I quite fancy one of the special eds but they are rare - the standard one is good looking though so I am going to have a proper look - not sure about all the trim levels but TS seems to have all that I could need?Cruise, elec windows, parking sensors, digital climate etc

Good drive, loads of space, interior a really nice place to sit.
For a standard 2.0 n/a engine it makes a lovely sound when pushed and there is useful daily grunt from it. Not as thirsty as I thought it would be.
Rusty arches are the main issue with them. I had zero other problems with mine.

Jesus, I thought we did well to get our 2l 53 plate for £1800. As others have said the 2l petrol is a decent engine with a chain cam, they drive well and are reliable (diesels and rusty arches aside). The estates manage a good boot and decent leg room in the back, with big doors for loading progeny. Very pleased with ours.Absolutely stole ours a year ago -

Ours (06, 49k) had been DIY'd on the rears but unless you inspected them you'd not know. A year later and nothing has changed.
As long as it's not full of filler I'd not worry much.

These weren't/aren't on my radar due to the reliability issues on the diesels - and the fact that most irish petrol 6s seem to be 1.8s.
But at the "snotter" end of the market one has to be open to all options - so while the diesels are bad news on the 6 - a nice petrol one is always a possibility.
Alas its highly unlikely to be a 2.3 with 49 k on the clock though

Just ran mine for a year , thinking of moving on now, its a 2006, one of the last of that model, overall its been a good car:

Haven't spent a penny, granted the clutch needs doing, nothing has gone wrong in 15K and car is on 80K. Good to maintain, no cam belt on 2.0 petrol at least and even tyres were only £60 for decent mid range
Pulls well for a 2.0, 150bhp with VVT, you do have to rev it mind
Boot is huge (hatch), as big as smaller estates, seats fold flat very easily to create level platform
Kit is great on my ts2: climate, bose stereo, cruise, sunroof etc
Handles well for what it is on a back road, coupled with a revy engine
Very cheap for what they offer,

Bad:
Rusty arches, loads I looked at suffered and mine was fine a year ago but is just starting to bubble, exactly the same as my Mk1 MX5, you would think Mazda would have learnt
The trim feels a bit flmisy after a year of hard use, nothing has fallen off but it does feel like it was done on a budget, kinda like a French car, but being Jap nothing has fallen off. After 80k of family use, a bulb has gone behind the temp control and the rear passenger window wont open from the front, but will from the rear, so pretty good.
Road noise is pretty high on motorways , I guess tyres could play a part, but there aint much insulation
A bit thirsty, but then again its a 2,0 petrol so what am I expecting?? I thought it would run a bit leaner, esp when cold
Clutch is a bit weak, but mine has lasted to 80k and needs doing, I saw a few with similar
It didnt start once, I left it for 5 mins and it started first time!!! Typical Jap it fixed itself!
Stay away from the diesel.....seriously...just dont
Overall great cars, I wanted a 2.0 estate as they are huge and great buy, but I couldn't find any for sale at all, there were a fair few 2,3's which I kinda wish I went for , but I'm not sure how much worse the fuel would have been.
I'm only moving on as the rust is bothering me and I want something "solider"
