Mk4 Golf V6 4motion, what are they like
Discussion
So what are these V6 4 wheel drive golfs like to drive and live with?
I wanted to get a Mk3 supra, but cannot find one in manual in good nick, and I probably would not be able to stop the tin worm as it would have to live outside, so I'm looking at something a bit more modern, so i find a mk4 golf V6.
anything i should know about before going to look at one.

I have one. Performance is disappointing but by no means outright slow. The R32 is the one to go for if you can stretch the cash.
They handle like boats as standard but can be vastly improved with aftermarket suspension and anti-roll bars, they are generally high-spec (heated leather, sat-nav and xenons if you're lucky), mine does about 30mpg on a motorway run which makes up half my commute and i get about 300 miles from 47 litres of shell v-power nitro plus type R xtreme or whatever they're calling it now.

My dad a had one as a company car, it was a 03 plate and he had it for 3 years. Since then he had a A4 avant, a couple of 911 4s and a 335d. He always has fond memories of the 4 motion and going by what car he mentions the most I would say overall it was his favourite. He recently tried a colleague’s MK6 golf GTI for the day and enjoyed that so bought a GTD the next month.
I remember when he got it he was a little disappointed as he expected it to look more like the R32 but that soon wore off and he took the badges off.
I used to use the golf quite a lot and it was a lazy cruiser. Used to open up the airbox to get some induction noise. (I was 18). I had a 309GTI at the time and used to like getting back into that as the controls felt nicely weighted but I really liked the V6 engine. Sounded nice and although not fast it felt smooth.

I have a mk4 R32 atm. sounds amazing, pretty comfy even with VW racing springs. Not mega fast in a straight line but launches well in any weather, and had bags full of grip when pushing on down twisty roads. The handling is pretty dissapointing imo, car feels heavy and understeers quite badly in the wet sometimes. Fuel consumption isn't horrendous, i get about 23-26 mpg. Mostly town driving and in traffic.
Yeah a mate of mine has an R32 and I was disappointed with it. Throttle is shocking, pretty much on or off. Think the second half of the pedal travel does nothing on his. Felt weighty similar to the 4 motion too. For the money I think I would rather a 4 motion now and for the money a R32 costs I would buy something else. I used to love R32s but totally gone off them now.
see, with 204bhp, i think it would be quicker than a 2.0litre galant thats got front wheel drive and 135 bhp on a good day.
as for handling, well, i would have to have a ride in one to see the difference in the two, but understeering imo, is a lot down to the style of driving, as you can adjust your driving to cancel out or even not get understeer at all, (i understand that there will always be times that you WILL get understeer, but in the whole, i never get understeer in my galant, apart from once on one corner thats an uphill 90degree heavily cambered corner.

I agree that driving style causes 90% of the issues. I think the main problem is the weight of the vr6 out front. Almost all road cars are also set up to understeer for safety. The 4motion is also not helping due to the system being reactive instead of proactive. (you can get a haldex controller that changes this but very expensive) So when the front wheels start to spin the power is then sent to the rear but by this time it just pushes the front end to wash out. You can drive around it by modulating the throttle and "flicking" the car into tighter corners but on roundabouts and slower speed its not very practical or sensible. I found that the mk5 R32 seems Alot better in the same situations.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
