As above. I have about £8k to spend on a second car for fun, road trips and the better half to use for shopping.

In terms of practicality for the above uses I think they're both about the same (except number of doors).

I don't want reliability issues so I've narrowed it down to these 2 even though the Japanese thing may be more of a myth these days.

So, which is more likely to cost money in repairs? Which is more fun? Which should I go for?

You could get yourself a nice Integra DC5 for that amount of money which is everything the FN2 is and more.

You'd get a lot more for your money with a Mazda in terms of condition, age and mileage.
No V-tec tax ya' see.

Yep its a better car all round.

Mazda 3 would not be on my radar at all at that price range.

Why not , not everyone wants a car comprimised in the pursuit of handling alone .

The mps is the best allround hot hatch at that price point , it can do the speed the handling and the comfort right out the box.

I totally disagree as did road tests of the time.

Only an owner of one would have this opinion.

Plenty of other better hot hatches.

Neither, these are not good second car material IMO, they are daily drivers.

If it were my money I'd be looking for something a lot more hardcore. (I'm not sure what though)

Is the Mazda 3 actually reliable? I have crossed Mazda off my reliability list after owning an MX-5 and hearing stories about 6's (not to mention the RX-8 but that's really a different kettle of fish).

£8000 for a toy, and the best you could come up with was a 3MPS and an FN2?

I'll pitch in with Mk2 Leon cupra/FR. Bmw 130i m sport

I couldn't live the Fn2 ctr, I got rid after 3 month, replaced it with a Bmw 130i m sport, which was more economical than the Honda, the bimmer also got the thumbs up from the missus

Got to agree with this. Both cars are just every day drivers, nothing special about them at all.

Go and buy a caterham or something.

Of those MPS no contest IMO.

If those are your final choices all depends on use, and what you mean by second car.

I think it's probably fairer to say that the FN2 is worse because it attempts to be a better all-rounder.

Errm seriously? I'm a chrysler fan but come on. Decent cars but can't imagine an mps potential owner would fancy one.

Amg slk on budget. More fun than an mps maybe although i really do rate mps.

Or what about those hot Volvo c30s if it's a hatch you are set on.

Depends if you prefer the turbo shove or high revving antics! MPS has £500 tax band.
