I has a 2002 270CDI estate. Engine was fine. Had a slight problem with leaking injector O rings which made starting difficult, but an easy enough fix.Are they any good?
Shame the rest of the car wasn't as reliable as the engine!
I had a CLK270 as my daily up until last year when I sold it to get a CLK320 yes the engine is a bit noisy at idle but less so than any 4 pot diesel 174k miles on mine & june last year it ran 217bhp(yes I had it mapped) also the 270's don't have the dreaded DPF so one less headache they do seem to suffer with O rings on the Injectors but it's an easy fix. You have to make sure you put the right oil in as they are a bit particular it also makes them less noisy.
So I'd reccomend one get a CLK I can't fault mine & if I could have found another one with all the AMG kit on I'd have bought another one over the 320 even with the map on it's worse on fuel.

Having come from a decade in BMW diesels, I was staggered how poor the D5 lump was and suddenly discovered why people truly hate diesels.

The D5 is a very good engine as well, although it looks a bit antiquated compared to newer units it is fundamentally decent. As with all engines of this age the injectors can occasionally be an issue, but beyond that they're basically good.Making a decision between this engine or the Volvo D5 engine.

The Merc 2.7 is OK - the common failure points are exactly the same as the 2.2 and 3.2 from the same era as it is the same engine with one less/more cylinder.
The original D5 engine is a better unit, however. It is smoother, has less generic issues and is generally much nicer to drive engine wise. It is a bit overwhelmed in a XC90 but is just fine in a S60 or V70.
If you go for the Volvo, they are better combined with a manual gearbox.

I think this is the same engine as the 2.7 sprinter... If it is, its a very long lived engine. the local courier company has some with over 500k mile on the clock!
as people have said, the weak point seems to be the injector seals. I have the same engine in my Jeep, if you want to see how to change them click on the link below. If they are showing any signs of leaking, change them immediately as its then a simple job... mot important though, use the proper grease from Mercedes (available on Ebay) and use new bolts and seals. the lot comes to about £25
above all make SURE the bolt holes are clean and clear of debris before bolting things up. Use a twist drill by hand to clear the bottom of the hole, Grind a groove in an old bolt to do this and blow the hole clear with an air line. Failure to do this sees bolts strip, as they bottom on the debris in the bottom of the hole.
when people say they have had major problems, its usually they have left it leaking so long the injectors are very difficult to remove, then when they have got them out, they strip the bolts due to the debris falling in the bolt hole!
yes, its a noisy beast, but not that bad... it is a diesel after all!

The 2.7 CDI engine was built by Merc for a good few years. The period where I consider it to be one of the best engines that Merc produced was from Late 2003 right up to the time it was replaced by the 2.8 CDI around about 2007/8. During this period the 2.7CDI was the second largest engine production run only beaten into top spot by the amazing 3.2 CDI which on the face of it is a very similar engine.
It also depends on what vehicle this engine is fitted in since the sump will be different. My one is a E270 CDI and it hasnt had any issues in 8 years of ownership.

It's was a bit earlier that - it was dropped in 2005 as it would take too much work to make it EU4 compliant.I've a had a C270CDi since it was a few months old. I really like the rumble of the 5 cyl - it feels more powerful than it is, but it's perfectly adequate.
