Oh lordy, I can't believe I now find myself buying a Diesel car due to mpg.

My current car is a Touran 1.6s. It's gutless, drinks way more fuel that it should (about 24mpg despite having it looked at so many times and told no, it's fine honest mad ), it's got no spec and I no longer need 7 seats.

What I need is a cheap (max £3K, could stretch to £4.5 possibly) diesel car that has a small amount of spec on it. Don't need Sat Nav, would like Air Con but I could live without it although most cars do have it now, Electric front and rear windows are a must, sunroof would be good. I'm assuming all cars will have CD player and remote central locking. I need something smallish for parking as work parking is a nightmare. I have kids but eldest is about to drive and already has a car waiting and youngest rarely, if ever requires me to load a bike into my car so a medium size boot will do. Not small like a Corsa boot.

I've been looking at the, I know rather boring but practical Vauxhall Meriva. I'm not a lover of Ford or French cars. The current VW has really put me off VW/Audi and most likely Seat & Skoda as it has been so utterly unbelievably unreliable. I drive about 16,000m pa and it's likely to increase to 20,000 so I am looking for something I can slide out of rather than get up out of. An R53/56 mini is out the question, they are way too low. I've driven one for a few months and I'm just not as young and agile as I used to be so something slightly off the ground is needed.

How so very boring frown

Sounds like you need function over form, with a bit of reliability and comfort chucked in. As you have poo poo'd ze Germans and also Ford, you're left with the French offerings, which personally I'm not a fan of.

So I propose a nice little Scandanavian for you. The 9-3 is a nice compact estate, so ideal for bikes and occasional tip runs. Economical, good looking, and a few toys. Great VFM. This ones top of budget.

Yes it's french but it's got very good handling & therefore be a less mundane than the Meriva....
