In a soft moment ( I was obviously under the influence of something), I promised my eldest I would buy and insure (for the first year) his first car - he has now got himself a apprenticeship with a garage/engineering firm, and his 18th is coming up, so was thinking it was time to take the plunge........

So need some advice from other mums/dads who have gone through this situation this summer - what has been the best car, but probably more importantly best insurance for 18 year old boy?

Ideally car to cost around £1k'ish, thinking 1.2L max and want to avoid the Corsa if at all possible!

Have had a chat to Marmalade Insurance, but they only insure cars up to 9 years old, so something with a airbag or two, got a bit of cool about it, cheap to run and maintain for a aspiring engineer and reasonable insurance cover?

Was thinking about things like Citroen C1, C2, Pugs, VW Fox/Up (If i can find one at that price)?

Practical advice please!

1.0 Yaris/aygo/107/C1 is the default choice

Just check gearboxes on the clatter clones!

Other than that - 0 cred but should be reasonable to buy/insure

Vaux agila
Kia picanto
Hyundai i10
Dihatsu cuore (spelling?)
Proton gen2

VWs are overpriced for what you get. (imho)
Yaris 1.0. Wife has one and daughter learnt to drive in it. Practical, cheap to insure. Should be reliable (although my wifes is not.....) and relatively rust free.
Punto 1.2. Daughter got one as a 1st car. cheaper than most, some appear to rust but others don't so check them. Apparently the head gaskets can be week but daughters is fine. More economical than the yaris and feels more "grown up" to drive but does have very light steering. I really like it.
Clio 1.2. Daughter's boyfriend has one. Practical but more things have gone wrong with it than the punto. Leaking sunroofs are very common.

basically anything with a 1.2 engine or less should be cheap (relatively) to insure. I would buy on condition not age/model etc.

K11 micra, you can get a clean one for £600. They will drive until they rot. And he will be too embarrassed to show off in it to his mates (I speak from experience).

Fiat Panda - Cheap to insure, surprisingly robust and easy to drive for a novice.

Thanks for the hints everyone.

Ended up with a Suzuki Swift, a 09 plated 1.3 Attitude - it has decent alloys, rear wing, keyless entry - cost just over £2k with the bits and bobs that needed doing to it and insurance from Marmalade at £1080, so not to bad overall!
