Considering selling the Audi a3, paying off the credit card I used to buy it (it's zero percent interest for 26 months), and then buy myself a reliable semi shed.

I do under 10k a year, would like a diesel but believe I would get a more reliable petrol motor in my budget which is around 1500 tops.

Few ideas...

Lexus IS200 (2002 ish)
Honda Accord
Older Audi's?
Older BMW's?

I think the Lexus fits my needs but I've never driven one. It is big enough for me, I've loved that car since I was a kid, funny enough the local drug dealer had one about 15 years ago.

Anyway I'm looking for feedback on the idea of downgrading, and what to look for etc...

I've not had the Audi long, I do like it but I worry about it getting damaged, and I just have a feeling I will spend spend spend on it. So much to go wrong mechanically, carbon build up, dual mass flywheel, turbo... All big bills. Whereas a big enough bill from the Lexus and I would just go buy another motor.

In all likelihood your Audi will nearly be in six figure territory before something expensive goes wrong? Since you have it, downgrading to an older car might turn out to be a mistake. Sure the Audi is boring as fk but at least it has boring residuals and boring reliability in its favour.

I had 2000 IS200 and whilst it was nice enough it did feel too thirsty for the performance of the engine. Dynamically it was also no where as good as a similar era BMW, the traction control was very primitive in comparison. Build quality was great though, although I'd be surprised if you found one with an original working CD head unit.

My money would be on a E46 BMW.

I've seen that one, it would be my colour of choice too. There's one ok eBay in Carlisle, it's roughly same price, near perfect MOT history etc...

As for BMw e46, I like those too, a lot.

I dunno what to do, I feel like I might be better off selling the Audi, pay off small amount of debt, buy a cheap car, and have a few grand left over.

What's more likely to happen is I get no where near the money i paid on the Audi, pay off my debt, buy a old car, have no money spare, then have to find money to fix bits on the new car.

Exactly.

On almost any car if you search the web you'll find horror stories. Some are genuinely a pattern of issues, most are because people have a problem, google it, find a forum post and suddenly because two or three people have done the same thing it's a "common issue".

Do you like your car? If so keep it and drive it. If you don't like it then change it. Life is too short to worry about things that probably won't happen.

Yeah I like the a3. Can't go wrong, it only hurts the petrol pump. Undecided what to do.

It's currently at a detailing place having the interior done. I look after my cars.

The Lexus is pretty bulletproof so big bills shouldn't really be an issue but check to see roughly how much your A3 is worth first.

If you're worried about money/finances why aren't you 'detailing' it yourself? Enjoyable thing to do for many people.

What's the real problem here - the car or your attitude to money?
