So after my 1.9tdi died due to DPF and turbo issues I'm after a smooth petrol engine, as I feel the 9,000 miles a year I do doesn't justify a diesel and the fault might have been a case of said low milage.

What's required?

  • Efficient petrol engine (140+BHP of possible)
  • Reliable
  • No ridiculously expensive parts (hello DPF)
  • Comfortable and nice to look at
---

So far I've only found the 320i efficiency dynamics, however they appear to be well out of the budget.

Any recommendations?

For £5k you can get a mint low mileage 2010-2011 Honda Civic Type S 1.8 petrol (or Si if you want 5 door)

I had the 3dr Type R and it was still very practical, only complaints I had were ride quality but the Si or Type S are softer. They are bulletproof reliable and a genuine 40mpg from the 1.8 petrol whilst still 140bhp and 0-60 in 8.9 secs

Not too bad - I averaged 29/30 in my MK6, but that was driving it quite hard. 35 if you drive sensibly.

The older 2.0 petrol BMW engine has a lot of reliability issues. Have a look on e90post

If you're looking for something 3 series sized I'd recommend a Mercedes CLK or C Class depending on how many doors you need.

CLK 280 Avangarde

CLK200

C280 Avantgarde

C180 Sport

More sensible:

2009 Mondeo Titanium 50k

2008 2.5 Mazda 6 Sport

Or if you don't mind going smaller the the Focus in ST-3 spec ia a good call.
