I can't believe I am going to ask this as it is thoroughly depressing:

I have been shedding for years which has worked well for me, but the current shed is starting to show its age and there are a few jobs that may well put it in the scrap heap. Since I object to only getting 1% in the bank it looks like it is time to withdraw some money and buy myself something new(ish).

Ideally (which is never going to happen as it would be too niche):  A small 2dr Coupe, something small and pretty (but must be able to accommodate me: 6ft 1, 85Kg, athletic build, pedals OK for size 11s.  Small revvy cam-chain engine, I am OK with the spanners but as it will be my daily I need it to be reliable. No MX5 please as it needs to live outside, and am not that fond of welding. Please suggest something if you can think of it - all I can think of are kit cars.

Back to reality: My commute to work is less than 15 miles (might change) and at a Max 40mph; the roads that have been resurfaced to the typical low standard of a local council (now worse than before the resurfacing). Recommend me a new(ish) small hatchback, as low VED as possible, I don’t care in the slightest about air-con or other gadgets, a radio is all I need/want (winding windows are fine), no electronic handbrakes please. I do an occasional 400 mile+ round trip, so it must be OK on the motorway.

Prefer it wasn’t French or Italian as many years ago I spent many hours working on friends French and Italian cars - so please avoid then (I am sure they have probably improved reliability, but I am not convinced).

I prefer NA cam-chain engines, so far I can only find a Hyaundai i10 or Kia Picanto (same car really). Please save me from this – You can’t even have standard red paint on the i10 anymore!!! they are suitable cars, but to be honest I can't get enthusiastic about them.

Cost isn’t an issue, but keep it under (say) £10K so I don’t worry too much leaving it in the supermarket, easy to work on would be a bonus, I am looking to buy not lease.

Thanks in advance, please save me from a white i10 (standard colours aren't great for me: white or a rather odd violet/blue), at least they had a red on the Mk1 i10).

I would like something interesting, but I am trying to be sensible so I am not allowing myself a GT86.

Surely a Suzuki Swift Sport should be on your radar?

£10k will get you a very tidy 2-3 year old one, revvy chain cam engine, excellent chassis, reliable and cheap to run with good practicality.

Have you thought about a suzuki swift sport? Seems like a good compromise but unfortunately not a coupe.

Second this, am thinking about one for us too. Very high spec too even in base trim, wasn't many options you can spec them with due to them already having them.

Edit: something left field could be the 130i - very lively engine in this car with 6s to 60mph, often fully specced with this engine.

Either a smart for four brabus or a Mitsubishi colt ralliart. Neither will break the bank, but you're looking at around 7 secs 0-60 for both. Lovely driving cars too!

I can't see anything in the OP that disallows you from a Z4 Coupe 3.0Si. I've had mine for a year its a cracking car. It just about scrapes being a hatch and its a coupe wink

Looks are subjective obviously, but what about the 1.7 Ford Puma, or the Ford Racing Puma if budget allows? Nippy engine, decent chassis/handling and a great gearbox. Most will have rusty rear arches but you may be able to find one that's been repaired. They're going for peanuts.

I think the Fiesta ST is forced induction, I would prefer to keep it simple with normally aspirated to be honest, almost all my driving is on slow roads, I would like an ST and Ford have some competitive lease deals, but I will almost certainly be paying cash, which isn't so attractive. I have a long history with Ford cars, so it is very tempting, perhaps a trip to see a few.

Suzuki Swift... I like your thinking, forgot they were cam chain... I am not sure I want a 3 year old car; considering most of the people round here seem to hit speed bumps at 30mph banghead if it doesn't rip the suspension off they think it hasn't damaged it! I had to change all the dampers when I first got my current shed, not sure I want to do that on my drive again. Still, I like the suggestion, anything to look out for on a Swift?

Honda CRZ, to be honest they have all the complexity of a hybrid, but the fuel economy doesn't justify the expense, looks great, just a pity it doesn't have a conventional engine option.

1 series, I had a 11?d as a hire car via work and it was not for me (and the pedal spacing was too small)

Sirocco/Golf is a bit big for my needs and all Sirocco are turbo charged (aren't they cam belt?)

Ford Puma, well I would love a FRP, but finding a good one is going to be hard, other than the rust it would be perfect (even if they are cam belt). The relatively small revvy engine is the sort of thing I am looking for - if they were newer (and galvanised) I would have one - you are almost right one the money there.

Z4 3.0: I am not joking about the slow commute, using a 3L engine for a 40mph commute seems a bit silly.

Thanks all,

I like the idea of a Suzuki Swift, might have a look at one of those with delivery miles, or I might just carry on shedding...
