Morning all

I am after a barge in which to cart my elderly parents - it's going to be used for long motorway runs and my work commute.

A friend of mine who collects cars is open to selling me either a 2001 e38 BMW 728i sport with 120k miles or a 1997 w140 s class which I think is an s320L - with approx 50k miles.

Both cars are in excellent condition but have been sorned for the last 2 years under cover and will need recomissioning.

I would be grateful if those with practical experience of either car could give their views on which is likely to be a better prospect in terms of running costs and reliability. I'm thinking the merc will be comfiest but also most expensive to run.

Thanks in advance and happy Friday!

Keith

The 728 is the more modern feeling of the 2, watch for a rusty petrol tank (bd to replace) and st cooling system, surprisingly not as sluggish as you'd imagine but the inlet manifold off an old 525 boosts torque a noticable amount.

Based on their age and the fact they've be stood still for a couple of years, I'd have a good look round / test drive and go for the one that feels the best.

Or I'd just go for the e38 because I like 'em smile

My advice is don't rush into it. Test drive both thoroughly, have a look at other options, like the Jag XJ. For me it'd be the S Class due to the nicer ride.

I can vouch for a 728i. Great car for what you're looking for.

Thanks for your responses. My budget is a max of 5k. Not too concerned by fuel economy- I'm more interested in knowing which is less likely to cost s fortune to run!

Any thoughts on likely annual maintenance costs ?

That's no way to write about the OP's elderly parents you perve!

I should think £5k would get you a very nice E38, all the good ones seem to be around that price.
