This is not really a what car thread, but might be.
The other half is looking at changing her Mondeo for something newer.
Shes looking at no more than 10k, under 70k miles and newer than 2008.
Shes a dog walker and so she has lots of short journeys and the odd long trips at weekends when she goes to events.
Short journeys are stuck in traffic to pick to up dogs, go to walk dogs, drop off dogs, stuck in traffic etc etc.
Long journeys are 30-50 miles every other weekend and maybe the odd trip every now again to Cornwall from Kent.
She needs a large estate.

Her shortlist is as follows;
Mondeo and Passat.
At this price point and the distance she is prepared to travel they are all Diesel.
They have between 50-80k miles on them.

What are these diesels like? I am under the impression that she will suffer from DPF issues etc. She is adamant they they will be fine and the people that she has spoken to says that diesels are a lot better now days.

Thanks.

If she's doing long trips on weekends a diesel will be fine.

I've a VW sharan 1.9tdi that spend years doing a 2 mile each way daily trip with the odd long run. It's still going fine. just give it a DIY oil service more frequently than the book or obc suggest.

Response so far to an Outback is that she likes it, but won't have one with a sunroof as many years ago she had an old car and the sunroof leaked!
Other than that... good call. Forgot about them. What are the diesels like as she may not like the mpg on the petrol?

Only ever owned petrol, I'm afraid, but for 10k miles a year (if I read your post correctly) I personally wouldn't be worrying too much.

After my experience of a merc, there is no way either one of us would entertain another one. Besides the boot in the C class is too small and I think 1 gas guzzler in the family is enough (BMW 550i)

Wouldn't a Transit Connect sized van be better than any estate car for the job in hand?

It certainly would be, but then she would want a car as well (we've already had this conversation)

I'd get an MPV, fold / take out the seats during the week and put them back in for the weekend

I'd say these fit the bill the seats fold flat & she still has something that's not a van:

Or the same car in petrol form just over budget but haggling should get you back on budget.
