I am coming up to finishing my first year of driving I have a horrible hyundai amica for insurance reasons and want a big estate car for road trips around the country that can hold dogs and luggage etc and was really interested in one of these ive seen some with around 80 k to 90k miles for 3000 to buy. Are these as bulletproof as ive read want a reliable big car with a little bit more power than my tin can. I will be saving up for a second weekend car after getting this one but practical car comes first supra comes after.

I've been running a 2.0R (162 bhp) for over 3 years. It's a bit thirsty but you shouldn't be spending huge sums on parts; nothing has gone wrong on mine. Plenty of space and well-built. You don't see many about, which I like.

There is an 'S' variant which only has 135 bhp - you don't want that one, and avoid auto boxes (sluggish). The AWD is excellent, loads of grip in any conditions. Not a lot of torque, but the AVCS (variable valve timing thingy) means that it will accelerate keenly up to the red line without running out of puff. A lot of car for the money.

In general they're pretty bulletproof, I've had a couple in the past and they've been faultless. Service history and cam belt history are a must, 3k will buy a nice one. They're a great allrounder

Last year I had a XC70 Volvo that I was really disappointed with, harsh, rough and dubious 4*4 (on demand if it works) this year I fell upon a pefect spec car 3.0, heated leather, huge sunroof and sat nav for £3,900 - Outback 3.0 Rn and I love it.
Considering its our winter run around I have bought it new wheels (genuine and cheap), a tint on the rear glass, new wipers, a valet and even new mats - its a lovely car and outstanding value. It has a knocky drop link so I will replace the 2 rear one at circa £120 inc labour.
